  • Sick day! *cough hack splurt ouch* :-( #
  • @eriksr That’s what it feels like when I cough. I guess that’s why we have two lungs. Redundancy! #
  • @sumwan I manage to avoid the Daystar pretty well as it is. :-) #
  • The CoolIris iPhone app is VERY nice. I love the Firefox plugin version. Best way to browse lots of online photos. #
  • So I’ve got the little metal earpieces for my old Jawbone now, but I can’t find the charger. Curse them and their proprietary connector! :-/ #
  • Hey PDX! My friend @divadanese needs someone to video this TechforObama event at PSU at 5PM: http://tinyurl.com/56w3y6 (more…) #
  • You’d get a reserved front row seat, and the video would be featured on TechforObama.com. Email me - jabancroft@gmail.com - if you can help. #
  • Sorry for the short notice (totally my fault), but you’d be doing me and @divadanese a HUGE favor if you can help with that video. Thanks! #
  • And if you could retweet the “need someone to video TechforObama event at PSU at 5PM” word, that would be aweseome. Big opportunity here! :) #
  • Free idea for Apple: let us arrange our screens full of iPhone/touch apps in iTunes on the desktop. This is beyond unwieldy… :-( #
  • Watching Frontline, getting angry at some of the dumb things that corporations and governments sometimes do. Greed sucks. :-( #

Josh’s Lifelog for 2008-10-20

  • Psst - talks for Ignite Portland 4 have been chosen, and will be posted on http://www.igniteportland.com soon. Spread the word! :-) #
  • @rachelbancroft Gabe’s been nothing but surly since we cut his hair. Maybe his sweetness was in his blond locks, like Samson? ;-) #
  • Aaaand they’re up! The lineup for Ignite Portland 4 (IP4) has been posted. Check them out! http://tinyurl.com/56jtwq #
  • @jmoriarty Probably the same person who looked at a chicken, and said “I’m going to eat the next thing that comes out of it’s butt.” (eggs) #
  • Trying out Firefox 3.1 beta with Tracemonkey turned on (http://tinyurl.com/5j4aye - it’s off by default). Pretty speedy so far. Impressive! #
  • Um, is it just me, or does Google Reader not work AT ALL under Firefox 3.1b with Tracemonkey turned on? Even the iGoogle gadget… :-( #
  • @Nadreck Oops. Thanks for the headsup on the broken links. Should be fixed now! #
  • @edmistond Good call on disabling Gears to fix GReader under FF3.1b. That did it. Thanks! :-) #
  • @jezlyn Tell him to enjoy his toy! I’m writing up some “tips and tricks” soon, but basically, go light, use Fullscree (F11), and have fun! #
  • Ugh. I think I’m getting a sore throat. Don’t let me breathe on you. :-( #
  • Oh, man. I think one of my Sony MDR-EX51 earbuds is dying on me. Haven’t had to buy a new pair of these for a long time. *sigh* #
  • @jezlyn Yeah, Linux only ships on the SSD-only Eee PC 1000. The XP-based 1000H is much more prevalent. #
  • @jezlyn For a great Linux option on an Eee PC, try Ubuntu Eee: http://www.ubuntu-eee.com. Everything works, it’s great. but XP is good, too. #
  • @jezlyn The hard drive based Eee PC 1000s seem to be much more common. Easy to upgrade, too. @rodfather went to 320GB. #
  • @jezlyn Yes, the larger screen and more importantly, larger keyboard, make the 1000 quite attractive. Enjoy it! :-) #
  • @harrisja I had to disable Google Gears to get Reader working in Firefox 3.1b.. #
  • @JoshProStar Mac or Windows? NetNewsWire is popular for Mac. FeedDemon for Windows. But I’m a Google Reader man, through and through. :-) #
  • Ooh, the BrightKite iPhone app is out at the App Store: http://tinyurl.com/bkiteiphone Going to get it now. BrightKite might be useful now. #
  • That BrightKite iPhone app would be even better if I could find it in the App Store on my phone. Let alone install it. *sigh* #
  • Testing the Brightkite iPhone app. I’ve never heard of “Buckheaven, OR”, though. :-) - http://bkite.com/01Up7 #
  • Urgh. I’m definitely sick. Sore throat, cough, came on fast. Barring a miracle, methinks I’ll spend tomorrow in bed. :-( #

  • Just gave Gabe his first home clipper haircut. Was traumatic for everyone involved. #
  • @jltitus He’s still cute. He just looks so different without his long-ish hair. He’s only two! :-) #

Josh’s Lifelog for 2008-10-18

  • At Lake View Farms pumpkin patch/money trap with the family. Not trying to copycat @billpearson. :-) #
  • The pneumatic fake shark in the pond is awesome. :-) #

Josh’s Lifelog for 2008-10-17

  • Posted the first of what will probably be a long series on netbooks at Intel Software Network: http://tinyurl.com/3nz5pb More to come! :-) #
  • @Jerry_Makare I do not have a lav mic, unfortunately, and I’m not in the office today. Sorry, man! :-( #
  • Took Rachel to a belated birthday dinner for date night, now wandering aimlessly. :-) #

Josh’s Lifelog for 2008-10-16

  • @billpearson is going over the “manager feedback” he got from our team in staff. Very positive discussion, and incredible transparency. Yay! #
  • @wajiii http://twitter.com/billpearson definitely exists. He’s a long time Twitterer. Twitter must be having a hiccup or something. #
  • Today is a writing day. I’m cracking down, going to work/hide from an undisclosed location. #
  • @dslanius @billpearson Ha! I’m meeting with @jmoriarty before I take off for said undisclosed location. :-) #
  • @lightingdiva Sure! I closed Outlook, so I don’t know what my calendar looks like, but if you can find a spot, I’d love to meet. :-) #

Josh’s Lifelog for 2008-10-15

  • HUGE thanks to everyone who submitted a talk idea for Ignite Portland 4. Over 50 of them! Lineup will be announced on October 20. #
  • Hey Twitter! Today is my lovely, wonderful, beautiful, talented wife @rachelbancroft’s birthday. Happy Birthday sweetie! I love you! :-) #
  • If you have birthday wishes for @rachelbancroft, just tweet them, and I’ll make sure she sees them. Thanks! :-) #
  • @DinkerP2 Heh. She’s away at her mom’s for a couple of days for relaxation. We’ll do something fun this weekend. :-) #
  • Everyone walking by my desk is an armchair financial analyst. They walk by the nearby TV, see CNBC or whatever, and off they go… #
  • To clarify, it’s not MY TV they’re seeing. It’s the one in the JF1 kitchen/living room area, which blares cable news All. Day. Long. :-( #
  • @chrispirillo I thought there was going to be at least one winner chosen from someone who was AT Gnomedex? #
  • @adamd Yeah, but at least you don’t refer to yourself in the third person all the time. THAT’S annoying. ;-0 #
  • @jtoeman I’m not sure. I just saw the “no gnomes” in the blog post title, and inferred that no Gnomedex attendees were selected. #
  • @jtoeman @chrispirillo Oh, ok. Well in that case, I’m just disappointed that I didn’t win. ;-) But them’s the breaks! #
  • @jtoeman Besides, how do you KNOW none of them are really gnomes? ;-) #
  • Finally got around to checking my “follow cost”. 759.62 milliscobles. Hmm. Am I that bad? ;-) http://followcost.com/jabancroft #
  • And apparently, twitter.grader.com says my “grade” is 99.3 out of 100, which puts me in the “Twitter Elite” for Portland. Um, w00t? :-) #
  • @Jmartens Not sure what’s up with the pulseofpdx.com site, but it’s functionality has been dead ever since Twitter disabled “with_friends”. #
  • @geoffk Thanks. :-) But I wonder if it really means “hey! you tweet too dang much!”? :-) #
  • @dswiese I suppose you could recreate “with_friends” with a pipe or some other aggregation. But it would be a PAIN at scale… #
  • Wow, FriendFeed in “realtime” is VERY cool. http://friendfeed.com/realtime and http://tinyurl.com/5ysluw Even includes a pop-out version. #
  • Pro-tip: the Pop-out version of FF realtime (http://friendfeed.com/realtime?embed=1) works great on the iPhone. Text is kinda small, though. #
  • And the popout FriendFeed Realtime (http://friendfeed.com/realtime?embed=1) would make a GREAT FluidApp. #
  • @niczak It just barely launched. :-) #
  • Argh! I just wrote a whole blog post about FriendFeed realtime view, and the WordPress “Press This” bookmarklet ate it! :-( #
  • I love you guys. Living the debate vicariously through you. I’ll watch it later on PBS. Off on some important errands! :-) #
  • Get the top end MacBook Pro that was selling for $2499 two days ago for only $1644 from Amazon. Amazing deal! http://tinyurl.com/4cchmz #
  • I saw gas for $2.99 on the way home tonight (Arco at Murray and TV Hwy). $3.09 at lots of other local stations. Why isn’t this bigger news? #

Josh’s Lifelog for 2008-10-14

  • A black cat darted across TV Hwy this morning, and the car in front of me hit it. :-( Didn’t need the twitching kitty mental imagery… :-( #
  • @ahockley It wasn’t splattered. It was a glancing blow. The front half was immobile, the back half twitching. Tail whirling like a copter… #
  • Reminder that I’m liveblogging the Apple thing this morning: http://tinyurl.com/4gqa8l If you’re at Intel, come over to the JF1 living room. #
  • Sorry to all about the cat imagery. Seriously. I thought if I shared it, it would leave my head. It didn’t. #
  • @linuxaid Hey, at least I didn’t post pics/video… :-( #
  • @KathySierra Wow. At least the birdie flew away later. Yay for happy endings! :-) #
  • Beginning Apple notebook event liveblog…. Now! :-) http://tinyurl.com/4gqa8l #
  • Quote of the month: Steve Jobs “You know, Blu-Ray is just a big bag of hurt.” :-) #
  • What the heck is that little slot on the right side of the front edge of the new MacBook Pro? Next to the sleep light. #
  • Also, I don’t see an IR port on the new MacBooks/Pros. Do they no longer work with the Apple Remote? #
  • The Apple Remote is still listed as an accessory for the MBP (http://tinyurl.com/qgygr), so I guess there’s still an IR port somewhere. #
  • Ouch. The Mini Display Port to DVI adapter is $29, not included with the MBP. And the DVI Dual Link adapter is a whopping $99. Yeesh. #
  • The new 24″ Apple LED Cinema Display is Mini Display Port only. Will it work with VGA/DVI sources with an adapter? #
  • @clint got some hands on pics with the removable battery and hard drive in the new MacBook Pro. Check it out! http://tinyurl.com/4kmkxj #
  • So the new MacBook Pros have 48 NVidia graphics cores. Wow. Can’t wait to see how 10.6 Snow Leopard (OpenCL and GrandCentral) use them. #
  • @siracusa @clint posted hands on pics of just how easy it is to swap the new MBP hard drive. Piece of cake. http://tinyurl.com/4kmkxj #
  • So no more Firewire on MacBooks. And only FW800 on the MBP. Can you get a FW400 adapter, or are you screwed if you have FW400 devices? #
  • @robertbrook Yes, that looks right. Only works for 6-pin FW400 connectors. Would need a different/additional adapter for 4-pin devices. #
  • Dear LazyTwitter: What website monitoring/notification solutions do you use? Pingdom? Montastic? Something else? #
  • @funkatron Thanks for site24×7.com. Will check it out. Also thanks for the pingdom/zaptxt recommendations. Checking uptimeparty.com, too. #
  • Yeah, it sucks that the new MacBook Pros don’t have FW400, but it’s the same reason they don’t have DVI AND VGA, etc. You can use an adapter #
  • @chrisorourke I dunno. I always saw the 17″ MBP as an outlier. It’s just so dang BIG! It’s a lot more rare than the 15″ model, too. #
  • Only 8 hours remaining for your Ignite Portland 4 talk idea submissions. Tick tock, people! :-) http://www.igniteportland.com #
  • Giving Yammer a shot as a backchannel during Paul Otellini’s internal Q3 employee webcast. #
  • It’s too bad that the dual GPUs in the MacBook Pro can’t be used in some kind of uber-powerful hybrid SLI mode (instead of one or the other) #
  • @LeStew You can switch between them. Less powerful GPU = more battery life. Vice versa. Have to log out to switch between them. #
  • @LeStew What’s weird is that it seems to default to only ever use the slower/lower power GPU unless you change the setting. #
  • That was fun - used Yammer to backchannel an Intel CEO webcast. Still have this vague unease that Yammer is going to cause a debacle someday #
  • @funkatron Yeah, no kidding. I bet NVidia loves it, though. Imagine if Intel could sell Apple not one but TWO CPUs for every MacBook Pro! ;) #
  • @StevenWalling It’s… interesting. More people need to get on it, IMO. Right now, we Twitterari are kind of dominating it. :-) #
  • @psteinb Do you use Yammer? It’s like a semi-private, internet accessible, company-centric Twitter. I’ll demo next time I see you. #
  • @StevenWalling Same at Intel. There is some overlap with Twitter people, but Yammer tends to have a different group of users. Interesting. #
  • @StevenWalling Yeah. When you work at the same company with a bunch of people, you already have a reason to connect - something in common. #
  • @rachelbancroft ZOMG seriously? I wish I could be a fly on the wall for that. Do tweet anything interesting! :-) #
  • For those grouchy about the lack of matte-finish displays on the new MacBooks, how could you do a matte finish on a glass screen? Sandblast? #
  • Ooh! The new MacBooks will support your iPhone headphones, including clicking to change tracks AND the microphone: http://tinyurl.com/4lzcge #
  • Dangit. If I’d known that PBS Frontline was running an ep on Obama/McCain, I would have started watching earlier. #
  • Instead, I read a bunch of Anathem. I LOVE that book. Neal Stephenson rocks my world. #
  • @njpaust @gwalter yes, I love that you can watch Frontline online in it’s entirety. Need to find time to watch the whole thing. #
  • @DivaDanese The audiobook version has got to be DAYS long, unless abridged. You’ll love every second. :-) #
  • Whoa. I swear the font on friendfeed.com/iPhone/ just changed. Got a little smaller/crisper. Right before my eyes. (via FriendF.. #

  • Hey, you, With the brain. You’ve only got 1.5 days to submit your Ignite Portland 4 talk idea. So get on it! :-) http://tinyurl.com/3qjdzq #
  • Just posted on the Ignite Portland blog, haranguing you (yes, you) to submit your talk idea before it’s too late: http://tinyurl.com/3ej89g #
  • @petsaretalking It’s going to be really hard to pick just 14 talks from the submissions. It’s hard every time. So much good stuff! :-) #
  • What a day. Barely got through email backlog. Meetings upon meetings. Mostly ignored feeds and Twitter (sorry!). Not feeling accomplished. #
  • Just in case you’re a nocturnal Tweeter, and didn’t hear this morning, you have 1 day to submit an IP4 talk idea: http://tinyurl.com/3ej89g #
  • @gwalter I thought they said IM wasntco #
  • @gwalter Er, that IM wasn’t coming back? #
  • I saw a strange phrase at the top of Google’s Hot Queries a while ago. Then I saw it in the Final Jeopardy clue. :-) #
  • I knew I wasn’t the only one to use Google to cheat at Final Jeopardy, but dang! :-) #
  • Getting a head start on my liveblogging for tomorrow’s Apple notebook refresh event. I can’t wait! :-) http://tinyurl.com/nrkpa #
  • Engadget has a plausible blurrycam shot of the new MacBook Pro, which supposedly has *two* NVidia GPUs. Whoa. http://tinyurl.com/3p77ut #
  • @davechen Yup, it’s about time for an upgrade. :-) #
  • @thiskat yes, I believe the “note to organizers” doesn’t show up on the site. #

Josh’s Lifelog for 2008-10-12

  • Last night was MUCH better. I wore more layers, and it was 10 degrees warmer outside (44) due to cloud cover. We all stayed toasty! :-) #
  • Here I am: http://tinyurl.com/49z37s http://twitpic.com/fx09 #
  • Home never felt so good. Rest, shower, and sleep. Aaaahhh. :-) #
  • My favorite iPhone game right now is called “Browse the App Store and Download a Bunch of New Stuff”. It’s kind of expensive sometimes. :-) #
  • @jmartens me, too. What are you wanting to write about? #
  • @jmartens I have a bajillion book ideas bouncing around in my head and my notes. We should do that lunch sometime soon. :-) #
