Party host is a very apt description. The host needs to start off the party, keep the theme, and bring interesting people together in a way that promoted interaction (wow, sounds like a job description–it is!).

I can’t remember where I first heard the comparison. I know that Aaron Tersteeg, my coworker uses it a lot, too, but I don’t know which one of us started using it first. Oh well!
