- Played a little Mario Kart last night. I SUCK at the bikes. Can’t keep them off the walls. And I keep getting killed online. Embarrassing
# - I keep hearing such good things about Boom Blox on Twitter, Penny Arcade, and from @benkuchera at Ars that I’m going to have to pick it up. #
- @rigeek Did you send me your friend code? Mine is 0302 0226 1424. Would love to play some time!
(That goes for anyone else, too.) # - @natetrue Yeah, I’ve been meaning to register my friend code with them. Thanks!
# - @wii Mario Kart 0302-0226-1424 #
- @billpearson I can guarantee that buying every Intel employee an iPhone would have a (positive) impact on the quality of MIDs. Great idea! #
- @psteinb It would only need to support Exchange Activesync, which is built into the Exchange servers. I used to use it under pilot. Simple. #
- I really, really wish I could stay logged in to MediaTemple via SSH for more than 5 seconds. I need to tar up some files for @selenamarie… #
- I don’t know whether to blame Intel’s flaky proxies, or mediatemple. I’ll blame both, just to be safe. #
- @Skawtnyc It’s not timing out, the connection just goes dead after a random interval. Then I have to try 2 or 3 times to get back in. *sigh* #
- On the upside, I’m getting good and typing "tar -cvzf igniteportland.com.tar.gz ./*" as fast as I can.
# - Yay! I made it! That’s almost as exciting as winning on Mario Kart!
# - @psteinb I have no idea if Intel IT plans to support the iPhone or not. But when the 2.0 OS drops next month, a TON of us will want it.
# - @andrewhyde Do you mean that Twitter Tools posts are having blank categories? I never had that problem. I have duplicate post problems. #
- @andrewhyde I was messing around with assigning a different category, and excluding it from my feed. Hope you find a fix! #
- @turoczy You need keyless entry for your house. Ask MeFi has you covered: http://tinyurl.com/4gs3fe #
- Grabbing OpenOffice.org 3.0 beta, now that it has native Mac support. Hat tip to @marshallk - thanks!
# - @Marcel_InCircle Yup, you no longer need ugly old X11 to use OpenOffice.org on the Mac. Yay!
# - @rachelbancroft That’s my boy! Go big or go home!
And, uh, what does "PR’d" mean? # - Ever drive by or eat at Oney’s restaurant on Hwy 26, on the way to the coast? Well, it burned down.
http://tinyurl.com/3pcktn # - @psteinb I know nothing about the disappearance of that video, I promise!
I’ve still got it if you want another copy. # - @blath @bobuva Yeah. At least it wasn’t Camp 18 - that thing is nothing but one big logpile, waiting to go up! #
- @psteinb I’m doing a video tutorial/blog post on my whole video workflow, start to finish. You might find it useful.
# - Finished the meta-video for my video workflow tutorial post. Encoding now. Then: writing the actual post. Need lots of screenshots. #
- My laptop stickers - let me show you them! http://tinyurl.com/6dpqbv #
- Hey, remember Photoshop Express? It just got a LOT more interesting. They added Flickr support!
http://tinyurl.com/4gnccd # - @wii Nintendo Wii 1051-7785-8274-8863 #
- More Mario Kart practice tonight. Finished all the 100cc cups, most with Gold. I’m finally getting better with the bikes. #
- The only person who friended me back so far is @marusin. The rest of you are slackers.
Look up my code via @wii. # - Even better, register YOUR code with @wii (http://wiitransfer.com/codes) so we can easily find each other. Love that service!

- Ooh! FriendFeed has widgets! I’ve been wanting a way to put that stuff on my blog. Wish I could exclude tweets tho http://tinyurl.com/5gego3 #
- That is, I’m quite happy with the way my tweets are archived on my blog as my “lifelog” using WP and Twitter Tools. But I want my FF too!
# - I’ve added the FriendFeed widget to my site. Have a look, let me know what you think? http://www.tinyscreenfuls.com #
- I still wish I could filter Twitter out of the FF widget, but then again, it does show *today’s* tweets, which my lifelog doesn’t. #
- When helping some new people start using Twitter yesterday, they were asking me what the heck the birds and whale were all about. D’oh!
# - @ahockley I’d get a D3 (or a D300 or a D700) in a half a heartbeat if I had the money.
# - @chippy Yeah, I think I’ll dump the logo, too. Takes up too much space. #
- @lordjosh Consider yourself lucky, as a Twitter user, that you’re not more intimately familiar with the Failwhale: http://failwhale.com/
# - @durf Any of those D90 videos downloadable in original format? Ubuqity only goes so far in helping me translate/understand Japanese.
# - My CSS is WEAK. Trying to figure out how to make the font size inside the FF widget smaller, to match other stuff in sidebar. I’m too dumb. #
- It amazes me that, 6 months after it opened, people still walk into the remodeled Intel JF1 space, and loudly marvel “Wow, this is new!”
# - @jmoriarty That sucks. Go rest, and hope you feel better soon! #
- @ahockley Exactly. It was the one tube I use that wasn’t yet tied into my blog. Hope to get the kinks worked out before WordCampPDX!
# - OH: “Intel is renowned for having the attention span of a two year old.”
# - After a long Greasemonkey hiatus, going on a spree at userscripts.org, installing a bunch of cool stuff. #
- Just dropped by the Ars Lounge for the first time in a while, and there’s a ton of sick/lost family members, and other sad stuff. Bummed.

- It’s 0′dark thirty, and I’m about to get on a tiny Intel plane to Arizona for the day. I hear it’s powered by waste heat from Intel chips! #
- @ryanwi yes, Intel runs basically a small airline out of the Hillsboro airport, connected to most of its U.S. sites. #
- I have no ideas what timezone I’ll be in when I land, but it doesn’t matter, because I’ll only be there a few hours anyway.
# - Just checked the temperature forecast for Chandler today. Cried a little. #
- Arrived in AZ. Blessedly, it’s cool and rainy. Yay for monsoon season!
# - Just prattled on about Twitter to a room full of the smartest people at Intel. Hope I made sense!
# - @turoczy Would have done a demo, but it was a side conversation from what was to have been a short, generalized discussion of social tools. #
- @turoczy I have a feeling I’ll be giving LOTS of Twitter demos during lunchtime. Which I love! Come, ask me questions!
# - @turoczy Excellent, thanks. Everybody - when i do Twitter demos later, make sure you all say nice things about Intel Software Network!
# - Wish I had time to play with Mozilla Ubiquity today. It looks REALLY cool, and is getting a ton of buzz. http://tinyurl.com/5lf7n7 #
- Installed Ubiquity. So far, it seems like Quicksilver for Firefox. Which is SO completely awesome! This is going to change the web for me. #
- @annierodkins Ubiquity is a little text box in Firefox you launch with a keyboard, then tell it things like “email this to annie”, etc. #
- @annierodkins Just install it and play with it. It’s really easy to pick up. Here’s a good tutorial: http://tinyurl.com/6jm83k #
- Test tweet from Ubiquity. This thing ROCKS. If you’ve ever used Quicksilver on Mac or something similar, it’s like that, but for the web. #
- Meeting done. On the way back to the airport. It’s ZOMG hot! I could never live here.
# - @influxx yes, Ubiquity is super-fast. I’ve heard it bloats Firefox’s virtual memory footprint, but I haven’t seen that (yet). #
- Finally got around to reading up on the Nikon D90. I SO want this camera. Don’t even care about the D300 anymore. $1000? Movies? DO WANT!
# - The D90 shoots 1280×720 AVI video, with full DSLR controls, use whatever lens you want, etc. Stop and think for a sec about what that means. #
- That means that, depending on the quality of the D90s video compression, it’s (in theory) more flexible than the $3500 Canon XH A1 cam I use #
- @Jmartens I’ll probably pass my D40 on to my wife, but if it goes on the market, you’re first on the list. D40 is super cheap new - <$500 #
- The D90 has the D-Lighting feature from the D300, and the same superb high ISO (up to 3200) image quality. #
- Trying to suss out the differences between the D90 and D300. So far: 11pt autofocus instead of 51, and only 4.5 FPS (vs what, 8 on the D300) #
- And the optional GPS (fits on the shoe) for the D90 is just more icing on the cake. This camera gives me feelings I don’t understand.
# - Question: Will the D90 autofocus lenses (like the 50mm/1.8) that don’t have their own focus motor, or will it be manual, like the D40? #
- And the D90 uses SD (of which I have tons), not CF (which I was dreading switching to if I ever got a D300). This just gets better.
# - OK, it appears that the D90 WILL autofocus lenses without their own motor (like the 50mm/1.8). But I could be reading this wrong. #
- @EricAppel Yeah, manual focus on video and mono are kind of a bummer, but with the ability to do DoF in video now, manual might be better. #
- Looks like it uses the EN-EL3e battery, like the D300, instead of the EN-EL9 spares/charger I already have for the D40. Oh well. #
- @jezlyn I think you’re right, since the D90 is the evolution of the D70/D80, and the lack of focus motor is only on the D40/D60. #
- @trishussey Yeah, the difference between D80 and D90 is a lot closer than D40/D60 -> D90. #
- I’m dying to know what the video and audio bitrates for video on the D90 are. It uses AVI/Motion JPG, but bitrate is crucial. #
- @ctb I use the Aiptek Action HD camera for video (does 1080p, I shoot in 720p 60fps) which I love. But the sensor = tiny compared to the D90 #
- @ctb Plus all the yummy lens/depth of field stuff and image quality. D90 won’t be a Flip-like pocket cam, but still, DO WANT!
# - What I meant about Motion JPG bitrate is, I have a Canon SD700 that shoots MJPEG, the files are HUGE, usually need reencoding before upload. #
- @greghughes Yeah, we’ll definitely want fast SD III cards. Good news is that the 8GB SanDisk Extreme III is only $35. Yay for cheap flash! #
- @deangulstad Yeah, we’ll need sample video files to check the bitrates, and it seems those are still embargoed (sites can’t post yet). #
- Chase Jarvis and his crew got a bunch of D90s to play with for a couple of weeks. Don’t miss this post and video: http://tinyurl.com/6bo2pa #
- It was reading that Chase Jarvis post and watching the video that got me really excited about this camera. Not that I wouldn’t have anyway. #
- Enough focused (ha!) camera obsession from me tonight. Been up since 4:30 AM, going to bed now. Good night Twitter (and FriendFeed)!
# - @ahockley Some (cheap) Nikon lenses don’t have a focus motor. Neither do some cameras (D40/D60). Together, no autofocus. #

- @timbuk2 I believe the bag @segphault got was the Metro. I have one on order for my Eee PC. I think Messenger XS also fits pretty well. #
- @timbuk2 I’ll actually be testing a lot of things for fit in the Metro - various netbooks like the Eee PC, my Kindle, etc. #
- Nice. My Windows VM just bluescreened, trashed Outlook’s OST, and is forcing a scan of my PST. There are days I hate Windows…
# - @blogan No, on the non-hate days, I merely tolerate it as a necessary evil. Like going to the dentist. #
- @timbuk2 You bet. If UPS hadn’t “left in a UPS facility” my package, I would have my Metro already.
# - SUPAR SEKRIT Intel meeting!
# - This is actually a fascinating meeting I’m in. And I’m certain that I’d be fired for tweeting anything I’m hearing. So I won’t.
# - @rachelbancroft Sweet, thanks for letting me know! That will be my Timbuk2 Metro bag. GearX.com ROCKS for fixing UPS’s mistake, overnight. #
- Dear FriendFeed followers: Who in your network have you created “imaginary” friends for? I wish I could automate it, somehow, s.. #
- @ahockley Voicemail needs to die already. My greeting says “don’t leave a message, email or text me”, and I check messages every 6mo or so. #
- @blogan Intel proxies have been sporadically choking on TinyURLs this week. No idea why. #
- Dar LazyTwitter: Fink or MacPorts? #
- @blogan That link worked. And that site (http://nsfw.in) is a pretty cool idea. #
- I should go to bed. I’ve got to be on the Intel shuttle to AZ at 6 AM. There for a few hours, then home again. First time on the shuttle. #
»
- I was unable to get my Intel VPN working all weekend (since Thursday, even at home), so I had a mountain of email to climb this morning.
# - Oh UPS. A two week old Amazon order is showing “Left in a UPS Facility” as of a week ago. Call them, and they won’t do anything to help.
# - UPS said the shipper (an Amazon 3rd party store) would have to file a claim. Argh! #
- @bethlubov Perhaps it would be helpful to ignore who “owns” what, and focus on who *does” what. Might simplify things, ideally. #
- @jmoriarty I’m going to start answering all instances of the question “Who owns that?” with “Intel.” Because Intel owns us, soul and all.
# - Intel installed real, honest Comcast HD cable boxes for the TVs in JF1, to replace the crashy streaming software (http://tinyurl.com/6zs9nq) #
- @jmoriarty No, I gave up my soul about two years ago to get a Mac.
# - @aprilholle They never tried to deliver. And the facility where it got “left” is sort of out of the way for me: http://tinyurl.com/57m9r8
# - @bethlubov No problem - that person can be called The Decider(TM).
# - @jschultz Whoa. It was just a Google Map from Beaverton, OR to Shrewsbury, MA (where the package is). No idea why Intel choked on it. #
- @jschultz That’s really weird. Because I’m at Intel right now, and I TinyURL all the time. Dozens of times a day, make and follow. Weird. #
- Holy cow! There are 1300 sessions in the SXSW 2009 Panel Picker! How on earth am I supposed to go through all those and vote? #
- @funkatron Thanks - voted!
# - Dear Twitter Followers: If you have a panel submission at SXSW that you want me to vote for, let me know. I’m not digging through 1300 of em #
- Checking out the new beta of FriendFeed - it’s pretty nice so far. http://beta.friendfeed.com #
- New FriendFeed design (in Beta) lets you group your friends into lists - very cool! http://tinyurl.com/6e2ky3 #
- Hmm. FriendFee “lists” have a non-user-specific URL. What happens when someone who’s not me visits? http://beta.friendfeed.com/list/portland #
- @JeanAnnVK Apparently, those FriendFeed list URLs either give a FF 404 error page, or bounce people to the FF front page. #
- Arranging my FriendFeed friends into lists. Compulsively. So far I have Intel, Portland, “Never Met IRL”, and Ars lists. What’s next? #
- @ahockley Ooh. That’s a good idea for a list/group (Photographers). Keep em coming - how else should I slice and dice my friends? (Uh, wait) #
- @JeanAnnVK Yeah, it would be cool to be able to share my lists on FF. friendfeed.com/jabancroft/lists/listname, maybe. #
- @grigs No way! We just watched America’s Toughest Jobs. Which one is she? #

- Portland Ignites Gnomedex in just a few minutes! I’m excited! And nervous! Wish us luck!
# - The Portland Igniters ROCKED. Even an early morning, hungover crowd. The feedback on Twitter is universally positive. Thanks, guys!
# - Thank you all for the wishes and kind words about our Ignite presentation. Too many to name, you all rock! That’s why I love this stuff!
# - @influxx Ignite started at 9:15AM, PDT, before Sarah Lacy. I got video if you missed it! #
- Sarah Lacy: “When [blogging] so fundamentally changes the product…” Uh, what product? Perhaps that’s a sign of the disconnect here. #
- On the topic of “what makes a good blog”, Merlin Mann had a GREAT post on that topic this week. Go read it: http://tinyurl.com/5dgamk #
- I fear that Sarah Lacy has misread the audience (again). She admits it’s her first Gnomedex, but this crowd doesn’t go easy on anyone. #
- Retweet @chrisbrogan “Asking someone Do You Blog is like asking Do You Paper?” #
- I don’t care about driving traffic. I don’t care about getting on TechMeme. Let’s talk about what people CARE about (like yesterday). #
- I feel like we’re inventing “the challenge that faces blogging”. Why does there have to be a challenge? http://tinyurl.com/5dgamk #
- Some (most?) people blog because they obsessively love something, and feel compelled to share it. It’s usually that simple. #
- We need a technology solution to make commenting better? Tech will NEVER be able to make people not behave like a**holes. #
- @verso We’re not “her people”. She’s a tech writer. She can’t stop talking about how to make money through tech writing. The anti-otaku.
# - Raise your hand if you think video comments would cut DOWN on abuse/waste/spam? Anyone? Beuller? #
- @chrisbrogan I try to include the word “gnomedex” but that’s 8 whole characters I could otherwise use for snark!
# - Whoa. Got 25 or so new Twitter followers in the last hour. @chrisbrogan really brings the juice. Thanks, and welcome new tweeps!
# - Was really, really cool to have @rachelbancroft next to me this morning at Gnomedex. Best of both worlds (geek and family). Love it!
# - Nice plug for Doc Searls, VRM, and the Cluetrain from Eve Maier onstage at Gnomedex. http://projectvrm.org #
- @scottaw Amen. Anyone who has ever played an online game with voice chat knows that unless you restrict to people you know, it’s a sewer. #
- @annierodkins Oh, bummer. She’s left for the rest of the day, to go play in Seattle, Pike’s market, etc. What are you doing tonight? #
- Another one of the coolest things about Gnomedex: adding tons of people to Twitter, not blindly, but because I now know who they are.
# - Oh, cool! Adeona (open source laptop security/tracking software) guys on stage at Gnomedex now. Check this out! http://tinyurl.com/6jfgdd #
- Yoshi Kohno (onstage at Gnomedex): “Anyone ever heard of Bruce Schneier?”
# - Adeona is named after the Roman goddess of safe return. #
- Gnomedex (Yoshi): “Why is security always in the media? Because security is incredibly hard to get really right.” #
- Yoshi talks very fast. Data rate is high. Luckily the signal to noise ratio is good. Geek++ #gnomedex #
- Hey Gnomedex, want to be really freaked out about how scary arphids (RFIDs) can be? Read “Little Brother” (free): http://tinyurl.com/4xse5t #
- @jeremywright You’re right. The fact that “Little Brother” will make you feel empowered and smarter is a MUCH better reason to read it. Thx! #
- I installed and tested Adeona. It works. Returned my internal and external IPs, wireless network name, and my photo (Mac only). Excellent. #
- Hey Gnomedex: I wonder what kind of crypto Adeona uses on the key/location info? #
- Great lunch with @stevela, Vanessa, @caseorganic, Yoshi (from Adeona), and more. Now at Gnomedex: The Vocal Joystick #
- I wonder if we have to learn to speak a new language to control the Vocal Joystick? #gnomedex #
- Inevitable Vocal Joystick Art Project: Tone controlled robot arm fed various musical genres, to make it dance, paint, etc. Rap, opera, etc. #
- Inevitable Vocal Joystick Art Project #2: Singing different tones to control the dancing of an onscreen avatar. #
- From vocal joystick to black holes. This year’s Gnomedex is a contender for best I’ve attended (4th consecutive year) #
- Wait, these aren’t the black holes you’re thinking of. These are *internet* black holes. This just got more interesting. #gnomedex #
- Hubble (hubble.cs.washington.edu) is like downforeveryoneorjustme.com, but on crack. And steroids. With maps. #
- Looks like Amanda Koster, who presented yesterday, has joined Twitter: @salaamgarage. Hoping to run a trip to Guatemala for Gnomedexers. #
- Gnomedex Up Next: Boxee. Social media player. @chrispirillo says it’s the next evolution of XBMC (Xbox media player). Should be good. #
- XBMC was ported to Mac OS X, and renamed Plex (though they haven’t released yet). Will be interesting to see how Boxee compares. #
- Very interesting that Boxee is targeting Mac OS X and Linux. No mention at all of Windows support. #gnomedex #
- I wonder about OTA/HDTV support in Boxee. DVR/timeshifting? “Season Pass” subscription to OTA shows and scheduled recording? #
- OH @gadgetgy: “I have a Nokia N95. It’s a great camera, but it’s kind of clunky as a phone.”
# - @gadgetgy punted on the Cable Card/OTA question. He said “There are other projects, like MythTV, to do that TV thing. We do ethernet video.” #
- jay Cross shot a short video of me telling the story of Intelpedia: http://tinyurl.com/5zapwk #
- Next at Gnomedex: Scott Maxwell, the Mars Rover Driver Team Lead, on how the Mars rover is Twittering (as @MarsPhoenix) #
- Wish I had an image stabilized (VR in Nikon speak) lens on my D40. Or just a faster lens. My old Canon SD700 IS does better @gnomedex light. #
- Scott Maxwell, Mars Rover Driver: “My own twin girls, Spirit and Opportunity…”
# - “My job entails driving a golf cart around on another planet while simultaneously planning the invasion of the moon by giant spider robots.” #
- @bmw Um, yes! My next lens will be the 18-200 VR. Wanna part with one? Let’s make a deal… #
- @gregr I’m letting Auto ISO go up to 1600, which makes a big difference, but still not great. #
- @penmachine I have a 50mm/1.8, but it doesn’t autofocus on my D40 (which I knew when I bought it). I thought I’d use it more than I do. #
- Gnomedex Scott Maxwell: “Every day the [Mars Rover] pictures are right side up is a good day.”
# - Hey, Gnomedex. Did you know that every spacecraft is a weapons systems? If Scott tells us the names of the commands to drive, goes to prison #
- Gnomedex Scott Maxwell (on NASA): “If it doesn’t look impossible, we’re not interested.” #
- Gnomedex is totally hushed as Scott Maxwell shows us AMAZING photos from Mars. Like the first photo of Earth from another world. Standing O. #
- Retweet @seanbohan: This is only the second standing ovation at Gnomedex [that I've seen in 4 years]. Other was Derek Miller last year. #
- Scott Maxwell is on Twitter - @marsroverdriver. And of course, follow what he drives: @marsphoenix. #
- @penmachine I teared up a little, too, at those photos. Amazing stuff. #
- Gnomedex @marsroverdriver: “Mars has had nothing to do for the last billion years but make finer and finer dust. It’s been really busy.” #
- I love how Scott came to Gnomedex. He’s @stumax’s brother. One day at dinner, Stuart just casually mentioned what his brother does.
# - Next up at Gnomedex: Bug Labs (http://buglabs.net/). Open source hardware gadget building blocks. Should be great. #
- @andruedwards is right - the Mars 3.0 Gnomedex talk by @marsroverdirver is EASILY good enough for TED. If not better. #
- Gnomedex @jtoeman: “Everyone likes to tinker in some way. Maybe your tinkering is blogging. Maybe it’s cars. Maybe it’s software.” etc.
# - I entered the BugLabs contest. Would LOVE to get my hands on a BugLabs kit. Hope they like my idea!
# - Closing out day two of Gnomedex with more Ignite Seattle talks. More awesome. And I’m really, really sad that Gnomedex is almost over.
# - I’m going to say it - this year’s Gnomedex was the best ever.* (in my 4 years of attendance). I’ll be here next year, without a doubt. #
- @mattg LOL yeah, that’s a pretty good excuse for missing Gnomedex (getting married).
See you next year? # - Thank you, thank you, thank you to everyone at Gnomedex. I love you all! I meant it this morning when I called you my closest friends. #
- I felt otherwordly happiness at dinner with Gnomedex speakers, staff, and @rachelbancroft. I lead a charmed life.

- Arrived bright and early at Gnomedex to get my traditional seat, front and center. Wifi here is BLAZING (20Mbps both ways), with no one here #
- If you hate people tweeting about Gnomedex, you might want to unfollow me until Sunday (set a reminder to follow me again then, though!)
# - @marusin Bummer that you’re not here this year. This is one of the only times I get to see you, you know, in person.
# - Reminder: I converted the Gnomedex FF room I made into a “chatter” room, with different input feeds. Come chat! http://tinyurl.com/6dmoa3 #
- @jrnoded I’m looking for an excuse to come to Chicago. Can’t make it to C4, and MAX is in CA this year. What’s a good reason? I need pizza! #
- The best part about Gnomedex? Seeing old friends again. I missed you guys!
Second best part? Making new friends. (Aww.
# - @kk was one of the 20,000 accredited photographers at the Beijing Olympics. That’s a lot of photographers. Ask @scobleizer why.
# - @kk (Kris Krug, awesome photographer) gave a TON of great photography tips in the first Gnomedex session. Loved it. I need to do shoot more! #
- @kegill I’m in the front row, just to the left of the center aisle.
# - I love OpenID, OAuth, the Open Web in general, but I’m sorry, this talk is boring me to death. Maybe @missrogue will spice it up. #
- @penmachine just asked “what the heck does ma.gnolia DO?” Sad it got to the end of the preso before that tidbit was mentioned. #
- @harrisja Use this to see the whole Gnomedex conversation on Twitter: http://tinyurl.com/6jh73q Or TweetDeck. Or Track. #
- Next Gnomedex session should rock - Ben Huh, the guy who bought I Can Has Cheezburger from the guy who began it. Saw them at SXSW. They rock #
- Congrats to @RTVLivetopic for winning the HP 2133 Mini Note at Gnomedex!
# - @benhuh is great, but it’s a bummer that @ericnakagawa isn’t here. They were HILARIOUS together at SXSW last year.
# - At SXSW, the I Can Has Cheezburger guys actually brought cheeseburgers for the audience. I wonder if we’ll get them at Gnomedex?
# - @maryamie Yes, the kobe sliders last night were, in fact, very yummy.
# - You can preorder the I Can Has Cheezburger LOLcat book for $8 on Amazon: http://tinyurl.com/6r98p3 Comes out on Oct. 7, 2008. Will buy!
# - The vast majority of people at Gnomedex are WAY out in front on the Otaku/obsessive curve. Answers about tech skew appropriately. #
- @dannysullivan is Googlestalking Gnomedex attendees, calling them, asking them personal questions. I kinda hoped he’d call me!
# - @geekgiant Yes, I’m definitely on the “oversharer” end of the spectrum, too. But being so findable/trackable increases seredipity potential. #
- Nice! All Gnomedex attendees just got a 1 year premium Picnik (online photo editing on Flickr) account. Sweet!
# - Gnomedex lunch with @buzzmodo. Nice to see him again. One of the most gregarious guys I know.
# - @markbao on stage now. 16yo internet entrepreneur. Generation Y.5. #
- Francine Hardaway Gnomedex timetravel striptease FTW!
# - Francine Hardaway: “Things I Had Before Technology - [...] an extramarital affair that no one found out about!” :-O #
- Hypothesis: Young people adopt tech faster because they see the benefits of it more readily than old(er) people. Discuss. #
- I just realized how much HARDER it would have been to concentrate in school with today’s tech. Twitter, iPhone, FriendFeed, etc. Whoa. #
- As @jowyang’s niece famously said, “I only use email to talk to old people like YOU.” @markbao says all of his comms are Facebook and text. #
- @influxx Right, but @markbao was the one that said “we see the benefits of tech more readily”, which is what made me think about it.
# - @kk’s comment on “turn off the TV” WRT fear of ID theft, etc. So true! Fear of web gets blown WAY out of proportion. esp at companies. Fear! #
- @annaliese_h I can understand a teacher wanting to ban the stuff, but what if you could adapt your teaching to include it instead? #
- @mellowynk I think that the “unwillingness to learn” is our biggest problem as a society. Not sure if it has to do with age. Need to fix! #
- @mellowynk Yes, the desire/ability to learn new things is super important to maintain throughout life. I’m terrified of ever losing mine. #
- Regarding “how do we get more smart, motivated kids in school”, I firmly believe you have to do it in the home, not in school. #
- Too many kids are unlucky enough to miss that opportunity to learn to love learning in the home. Go mentor a kid (or five)!
# - Getting lots of great ideas to scribble down in the special little moleskine “big ideas” notebook here at Gnomedex. Yay for brain food!
# - Beth Kanter is a technology trainer for non-profits, teaching how to use these tools to do good. I think I want that job!
# - I love, love, love seeing @kanter’s pictures of Cambodian kids in tech schwag t-shirts (CC, Foo Camp, etc.). Heartwarming! #
- @influxx Portland Ignites Gnomedex tomorrow morning at 9:15 AM!
# - @kanter wants 250 people to donate $10 to send a young cambodian woman to college before Gnomedex ends. Go do it! http://tinyurl.com/5aj6fv #
- I just donated to @kanter’s cause. Have you? http://tinyurl.com/5aj6fv #
- @kanter’s donation experiment at Gnomedex was brilliant. Not only will the people in the room want to help, many will ask their own networks #
- Whoa. @kanter has achieved over 50% of her $2500 donation goal in the last *ten minutes*. Gnomedexers rock!
# - Less than 30 minutes later, counting the cash donations in the room (passing the fez), we smashed @kanter’s $2500 donation goal. Sweet.
# - @influxx The ChipIn widget, yes. It takes PayPay, credit card, etc. Thanks, if you donate!
# - @autiomaa Faster? Hmm. Maybe with a bigger group. This was an experiment, a smashing success, and something I’m proud to have been part of. #
- Dear Gnomedex Attendees: After Beth @Kanter and Amanda Koster, how many of you want to quit your jobs and go do good in the work? Hands up! #
- @missrogue That’s awesome. I can’t wait for the day when I can do that.
# - Serial Cyborg on stage. I think I just agreed to have something implanted in me. Oh well! Not like I’m unwilling. Implant me! #
- Nate Wade (Gnomedex “Serial Cyborg” presentation): “This is where it gets REALLY high tech…”
# - I’m half expecting Sarah Connor to storm in and try to kill Nate Wade, since he’s obviously the guy who’s going to create Skynet.
# - Little known fact: I’m deathly, irrationally afraid of Terminator-style cyborg endoskeletons. Nate Wade is giving me a panicky feeling… #
- I’m hyperventilating. I’m going to have nightmares. The Serial Cyborg video (movement through playing with the lighting) is SCARY! :-O #
- Nate Wade: “If we have to die in the process of [helping human evolution on its way to artificial intelligence], then so be it.” AAAAHH! :-O #
- Yay, @rachelbancroft is here! In the back of the room. Her first Gnomedex/Ignite experience!
# - @lyric911 I’m JoshB on Ars. #
- @jmoriarty I did see that T-800 DVD player. It made me cry a little. Nobody EVER give me one of those, K? #
- And we close out day 1 of Gnomedex with everyone dancing onstage with Where the Hell is Matt. Awesome.
# - Ignite Seattle rocked HARD. Going to be a tough act to follow tomorrow morning for the Portland Igniters, but they’re more than up for it. #
- New iPhone Flickr app Klick uploads pix taken with the app at full size, geotags, and has a great map interface. And it’s free. #
- Klick compares very favorably to Flickup. I’m told I need to retest a newer version of AirMe too. And Mobile Fotos. iPhone Flickr apps ahoy! #
- At Peso’s in Queen Anne for dinner with @rachelbancroft. #
- @WarnerCrocker Gnomesex is what the iPhone’s keyboard dictionary autocorrects Gnomedex to the first hundred or so times you write it.
# - Wandering around a really cool used book store on Queen Anne and Mercer in Seattle. Cory Doctorow would be proud.
# - Urgh. Found a flaw with Klick. Photos taken in the app (the only way to get them to Flickr full sized) doesn’t add them to the Photo Album. #
»
- Trying to get the kids ready to go to their cousins’ for the weekend, so @rachelbancroft and I can head to Seattle for Gnomedex. #
- At the Tacoma Art Museum on our way to Gnomedex. There’s a calligraphy/illuminated script exhibit that @rachelbancroft was dying to see. #
- @rachelbancroft sipping a diet coke at Gnomedex: http://twitpic.com/8kah #
- OMG Gwen, the cutest six and a half year old at Gnomedex, just gave us Creative Commons stickers and a paper Tweet. So cute! *head asplode* #

- Sounds like some cool stuff being announced at IDF this morning. Intel Parallel Tools (addon for Visual Studio), and a whole lot more. #
- Check out this hilarous Samsung Omnia i900 unboxing video (hat tip to @ravenme): http://tinyurl.com/5e67qs
# - Went looking for a Gnomedex room on FriendFeed, suprised that none existed. So I created one: http://friendfeed.com/rooms/gnomedex #
- Holy cow. 28,400+ people attended SIGGRAPH 2008 last week in L.A. http://tinyurl.com/58adyh I knew it was thousands, but I had no idea… #
- @davechen Yeah, I can see them handling even bigger crowds. It didn’t seem to be anywhere near capacity. Still, biggest con I’ve been to.
# - @kegill Absolutely.
Looking forward to seeing lots of people at Gnomedex. Just look for the bright orange Crocs (shoes).
# - So, that Gnomedex room I created on FriendFeed? Turns out there WAS already one: http://tinyurl.com/63ccc9 Deciding what to do w/the other. #
- @verso @dieselboi I’ve heard great things about FlickUp. Does everything an uploader should, IMO. Plus, I kinda know the guy who wrote it
# - @verso Yes, FlickUp preserves geotag metadata when sending to Flickr. Which is my #1 requirement, too. I haven’t tried it yet, though. YMMV. #
- @jltitus Flickup author (@kodachrome22) sez new 1.0.1 version fixes a LOT of issues. Still waiting for Apple to approve. I will buy it then. #
- @kodachrome22 Really? Sorry. (re 1.0.1 being out). Is everything cool with the new version? Time to buy?
# - @kodachrome22 I’m confused. Does Flickup preserve geodata when sending to Flickr, so photos are geotagged? Notes say all EXIF gets stripped. #
- Woo hoo! I just tested, and Flickup DOES preserve geodata on pics sent to Flickr. They show up on the map. Yay!
# - Also, Flickup sends images full size (1600×1200) when the picture is taken with Flickup. Images sent from the Photo Album go as 640×480. #
- Some playing and testing with Flickup turned into a full blown review I just posted: http://tinyurl.com/5l3zfo Verdict: Best one so far.
# - @kegill I don’t know @hrheingold, but orange Crocs have been my “signature” for a few years. That Mario Batali guy is biting MY style.

- Why, yes, I AM having a Coke Slurpee for breakfast. Why do you ask?
# - Oh dear. The guys behind I Can Has Cheezburger have launched a new site: http://engrishfunny.com/ Subscribed!
# - @StevenWalling I think I’ve got a good grip (ha!) on the @igniteportland Twitter account, but thanks for offering!
# - Whoa. It seems the *real* @JohnCleese is not only on Twitter, but also on FriendFeed: http://tinyurl.com/5z8kle Rock on, old dude!
# - @mellowynk I suppose it could be an elaborate ruse from an imposter, but hey, if he’s funny, what do I care about authenticity?
# - I believe I’ve found the very best way to post to a WordPress blog from the iPhone: The “Press This” bookmarklet http://tinyurl.com/5jyq7s #
- Updated iPhone to 2.0.2. No noticeable changes yet, but I’ll keep an eye out. #
- Apple decides to shut down the only blog they run, MobileMe Status, after barely three weeks on the air. Why? http://tinyurl.com/5mnrmj #
- Download a free copy of “Blue Planet Run”, a photo book about water in the world, from Amazon: http://tinyurl.com/2p2xpp (hat tip to Scoble) #
- @hangry Ah ha ha ha! I would totally wear those if they made a cargo pants version. Seriously.
(http://bit.ly/ucvCw) # - Getting a Jamba Juice. #
- ZOMG just saw a Nissan GT-R on the road for the first time. Had a minor tizzy fit in the car. Family still laughing at me. I WILL own one! #

- Totally loving the wild weather we’re having this morning. Lightning strikes, booming thunder, giant raindrops. Awesome. #
- Waitaminute. SquareEnix is doing a Chrono Trigger remake for the DS? Oh, yeah! I know what I want for Christmas! http://tinyurl.com/55h3ny #
- @ShannonRenee I’m at work in Hillsboro, Oregon. I luckily have a great window view from my desk.
# - Hey everybody. If you’re interested in helping as a volunteer for Ignite Portland 4 in Nov., there’s a kickoff meeting tonight. #
- Here’s the IP4 volunteer kickoff on Upcoming: http://tinyurl.com/6ehbw6 and you can hit up @adamd for more details. #
- Retweet from @ravenzachary (aka Mr. iPhone): iPhone software 2.0.2 is out. Grab it from iTunes. #
- I love uninstalling Mac apps with AppZapper (http://www.appzapper.com/). Pew pew pew!
# - @harrisja If it makes you feel any better, the Marriott charges for wifi, too. And it doesn’t even reach the rooms (lobby only). #
- @billpearson Don’t worry. Some people will never get it. I just take deep breaths, and go to my happy place.
# - To paraphrase Cory Doctorow (from the preface to Little Brother): The answer to controversial “bad” speech is MORE speech. NOT censorship. #
