New “Reduce Noise” Feature in iPhoto ‘08

I was processing some photos this morning in my brand new copy of iPhoto ‘08, and I noticed a new feature in the “Adjust” pane of the photo editor: “Reduce Noise”

It’s a slider that reduces the apparent “noise” or graininess in an image. This is prevalent in images taken at a high ISO setting, which is most of the shots I take in low light on my Canon SD700 IS.

Previously, you had to use a 3rd party tool to perform noise reduction on your photos. This feature wasn’t available in iPhoto 6, the previous version.

I’m quite happy to have this new feature - I’m already using it, and my pictures look better because of it. Thanks, Apple!

I’m in LOVE with iPhoto ‘08 so far. I love the idea of “events” - it makes so much sense to group photos together based on the timestamp. You have an option to control how “close together in time” photos have to be to be considered part of the same Event.

I’ve got all of my photos on my MBP arranged into their proper Events - had to manually merge some that spanned several days, and I have a “Family Photos” and “Random Photos” that act as catch alls for the pics I take that aren’t really related to any particular Event.

So far, iLife 08 is an AWESOME upgrade, and well worth it if only just for iPhoto 08 and iMovie 08. Very well done, Steve!

The Internet is the most powerful tool ever invented for AVOIDING marketing messages. Spam filters. Ad blockers. The web != captive audience #
The old marketing ways of hammering people on the head with messages doesn’t work on the web. You’ve got to find new ways. Give up control. #
