Nice phone, but not yet….

Oh yes, I am lusting in my heart, but I don’t flip for every short skirt. The iPhone looks incredibly great, but the intelligence ratio just doesn’t payout:
1. no sync with Outlook (maybe. someday–see Mary Jo Foley)
2. price needs to reach $299 or less ($150 with contract these things end up on the floor or in the toilet way too often)
3. real video capability, both IP and stored (better-than-EDGE connections and at least a 60G HDD to match the capability of an iPod, what good is video with only 8G of space????)

A one-demo-stand? Maybe. A complete and long-term relationship? Only if you can meet the conditions listed above.

But it is really pretty….and it has a great smile…….

What if the urge is extremely powerful, strong enough to melt concrete, but my willpower is even stronger, allowing me to resist it? And let me tell you, my willpower is crazy strong. I’m on year two of a 50-year seafood boycott, and I was born and raised in the middle of the Pacific Ocean (totally true). If I had a power ring, it’d be throwing off green sparks, like Guy Gardner’s, trying to contain my force of will (unproven but probably also true). I can keep my geek card, right? (Actually, I think the Guy Gardner reference pretty much secures my geekhood.)

David’s video is fantastic and I agree: Walt’s was very dry and to the point. Although I covet my Geek Card, I’ve decided to pass on this version of the iPhone. I need my Direct Push e-mail from Exchange as a FT blogger plus I need to be able to tether a phone to my UMPC as a modem. Not sure you can do that with the iPhone. No argument that it’s an amazing device, but that alone won’t justify my paying more to switch to a worse network (I’m on T-Mobile and Verizon right now). I’ll wait for a 3G iPhone at a minimum.

One other dealbreaker: I actually don’t use iTunes even though we have three iPods in the house. iTunes doesn’t have a subscription service and I thrive on the $15 a month Zune Pass subscription. Sounds silly, but if I don’t use the core competency of the device (iTunes), I just can’t justify the cost. Do I still have to turn in my Geek Card?

I love Pogue’s writing and the clip just goes to prove once more the guy’s got a good sense of humour. Aside from Ihnatko, David’s my favourite apple writer / journalist.

Yes, i want one, but, at the price of it, and a 2 year contract, and not being able to use it without activating the contract, and it costing a total about over $2000 with contract, thats a big reason for me not to want one. Other issue: When does it come to Europe?

He never explains what that black strip along the bottom of the back-side is! At least we know it’s not a battery or memory card door.

I already have too many desktop computers, a laptop, and a PDA. I don’t have, or want, a cell phone. I just don’t see what the iPhone would give me that I don’t already have. I don’t need a computer when I’m walking around. I’d like a GPS unit, but the iPhone isn’t that. The two-finger zooming is a neat interface idea, but I can live without it. The screen is probably better than my PDA’s, but I’m happy with the PDA screen. It doesn’t change from landscape to portrait depending on how I hold the unit, but it does automatically rotate pictures and movies so they fill the screen best.

I love the magazine covers at the beginning of the review!
