@JoeN-

I think it would run just fine from a solid state drive - witness the Samsung Q1 Flash-based model. I think right now the problem is the cost (high) and availability (low) of large enough Flash-based drives. But I'm sure that will change over the next year or so, and we'll start to see more and more solid state devices.

In addition to the visibility question, I am curious to know how the R2H would do running the OS from a solid state hard drive or flash drive. It seems like this would make an ideal candidate for an EFB (Electronic Flight Bag), but given the altitude restrictions of conventional hard drives, I would be interested in seeing how it would do with a solid state solution.

TabletKiosk will be releasing an EO 7210 (model number to change?) very soon which has a screen they say is "as good as a Motion"... I have seen the device myself and taken it in the bright sun of South Texas. It is most definitely NOT "as good as a Motion", but it IS much better than the other UMPC's to date. We will also see a few more UMPC type devices with outdoor screens in 2007, but I gotta ask why not just consider a Motion LS800 or perhaps the new Fujitsu P1610? We have these devices and they are acceptable - to - great in direct sunlight, better in indirect sun. Is it a matter of price? Now, if your needs are for flight plans, may be this is of interest. Viewability in both direct and indirect sunlight is very good. http://tinyurl.com/hszwm and www.eflybook.com Hope this helps!
