New Audio Gear on the way

After seeing and hearing people talk about their cool audio equipment at PME last week, I realized two things. One; having no background in audio or radio, I REALLY have no business being a podcaster ;-), and two; I had to get some better gear. So, I caved, and spent about $130 on the following items (which are on their way, hopefully arriving next week):

MXL990 Condenser Mic with Shock Mount:

Behringer Eurorack UB-Series UB1002FX Mixer:

They won’t be here in time for the TinyPodcast that I’m going to try to record with Brian tomorrow, but besides the “cool new toy” factor, this should be the bit of equipment I need to make sure that I get good quality voice recordings of Brian an I using Skype, Google Talk, or whatever.

Anyone have any experience using these? I’m definitely going to have to poke around until I figure it out. But, look at all those buttons! :-)

I started pulling out gadgets and talking about them at dinner during PME, and this is what we ended up with.

This is becoming an obligatory shot when I go to events like this. :-)

Aural Exciter with Optical Big Bottom

I just had to take a photo of this, during Paul Figgiani’s presentation at Podcast Academy.

“Baby got back!”

Mark over at Brainwagon thought it was funny, too. I’d link to his post, but I can’t get to his site right now…

Broken SD Card

Broken SD Card

Rob gave me this SD card that suffered a bending accident to try to salvage. I tried everything I could, but couldn’t get the card to be recognized by any of the recovery software I was using.

As you can see, the reason is that the dozens of tiny surface mount interconnects broke off when it was bent. You can’t really see it well in the photo, but the connects for the controller chip are broken, too.

Sorry, Rob. Unless someone knows of a way to access the flash chip directly, that card is a goner. Bummer, too - this card had all of his photos and videos from the Portable Media Expo on it… :-(

Photos from PME 2005

You can check out all of my photos from the Portable Media Expo and Podcast Conference, and Podcast Academy, in this set on Flickr.

I still need to do some tagging and organizing of the photos, but they’ve all got at least titles and descriptions, where appropriate. I’ll likely be blogging some of them individually, to highlight something I want to talk about.

Enjoy!

The Real Value of Podcasting

The Real Value of Podcasting

This is a slide from Doug Kaye’s keynote address on Saturday, that captures the feelings that I came away from the expo with regarding my blogs and podcasts.

I don’t do it for the money - I do it for the love! :-)

Porta-Potty Conference Next Door

Porta-Potty Conference Next Door

The Portable Media Expo shared the Ontairo Convention Center with the Portable Sanitation Association expo. Porta-podding and porta-potties, side by side.

There was a terrible outhouse odor in the air outside the hotels in Ontario every morning. I wonder if they were just trying to make the porta-potty folks feel at home? ;-)

The security guard at the door yelled at me after I took this picture - “I shouldn’t have let you take that!”. There must have been some industry secrets inside or something…

Update on Ads

I got rid of some of the ads in the sidebar, and the Google AdSense. Once I figure out what I’m going to do with the “tip jar” idea, I’ll get rid of the rest of the ads completely. Thanks to all who have written saying that ads are OK - I’ve never had any complaints. But, I do this because I love it, and I’ve personally decided that I’d rather not have them. Blame it on Leo Laporte, Doug Kaye, Dave Slusher, and Dave Winer, and their presentations/posts over the weekend and at the Portable Media Expo and Podcasting Conference.

I love this stuff, and I want you to read it because you do to. :-)

Final PME Thoughts

I?m on the light rail on the way from the airport. I?m drained, in a good way. Some final observations from the Portable Media Expo and Podcast Academy:

* Leo Laporte, Doug Kaye, and Dave Slusher were the favorite sessions, among people I talked to.

* SO many people came away with SO much enthusiasm for podcasting.

* I ran into so many people from Portland that we might double the attendance at the monthly Portland Podcasting meetups. There were a ton on my flight back, and we spent the time before the flight chatting excitedly. See PortlandPodcasting.org for the details, guys.

* Podcast Academy was a blast, and “an unqualified success,” according to Doug.

* I feel like I gave a lot, through talking to and teaching people, but I received more, from the relationships that were started or strengthened.

* I?ve decided a few things about what I want out of my blog and podcast. No more ads. I don?t care how many people subscribe. And I have big plans to improve the sound quality of TinyPodcast. I learned a ton from the many people with years and years of audio or radio experience.

* Humans, humans, humans! ;-)

I?m exhausted, and can?t wait to get home to see my girls. Have a great rest of the weekend!
