Yesterday, in the Blogging Academy brownbag and podcast, we talked about Citizen Journalism, and how you can get news, information, stories, and photos about current events from the internet that you otherwise wouldn’t see through traditional media. In that spirit, I want to share some links to some sources of information that have been keeping me up to date on the Hurricane Katrina disaster, and the aftermath (especially the flooding in New Orelans):

Wikipedia - Hurricane Katrina. The most complete, comprehensive, and up-to-date place for facts on the event that I’ve seen, hands down.
Technorati - Katrina. News, blog posts, links, and photos, all tagged as relevant to the disaster.
Flickr - Photos tagged with katrina. Amazing photos (and the stories that go along with them) submitted by people from all over the affected area.
ArsTechnica OpenForum Thread - Hurricane Katrina upgraded to cat 5 and getting stronger. I’ve been a member of the ArsTechnica community for a long time, and it’s hard to beat their collective info gathering and linking skills for a breaking event like this.
Metroblogging New Orelans. First hand blog accounts by New Orleans bloggers.

There are tons of other first hand and other useful accounts out there - most are just a search away. These are some of the most useful ones I’ve found. If you know of another good resource, feel free to post a comment. I may eventually move this my wiki if warranted.

@verso Yes, FlickUp preserves geotag metadata when sending to Flickr. Which is my #1 requirement, too. I haven’t tried it yet, though. YMMV. #
@jltitus Flickup author (@kodachrome22) sez new 1.0.1 version fixes a LOT of issues. Still waiting for Apple to approve. I will buy it then. #

@kodachrome22 I’m confused. Does Flickup preserve geodata when sending to Flickr, so photos are geotagged? Notes say all EXIF gets stripped. #
Woo hoo! I just tested, and Flickup DOES preserve geodata on pics sent to Flickr. They show up on the map. Yay! #
Also, Flickup sends images full size (1600×1200) when the picture is taken with Flickup. Images sent from the Photo Album go as 640×480. #

@atmasphere No Kindle regrets. If you love reading, you’ll love a Kindle. Still too pricey for mass adoption, but I love it anyway. #

There’s weird, loud, ghostly music floating around the streets of downtown L.A. Outdoor concert? Unknown celestial phenomenon? Zombies? #
Glad to be home in PDX. Seatmate was a cool geek named Alvin on his way back from the Olympics in Beijing. #
NOT glad to come home to a heat wave. It was a LOT cooler (albeit more humid) in L.A. #
I normally hate talking to people on airplanes, but it was fun to geek out with Alvin. He admired my Kindle, showed me his Sony Reader, etc. #
@atmasphere Yeah, the Sony Reader is nice. But I honestly found it kind of bland. Screen is bigger, but Kindle = more organic design. #
