- Finished “Breaking Dawn” last night. Great book if you like the series. Lots of twists. Not sure why it’s attracting so much hate. #
- @iSundevil You can browse/search Amazon’s Kindle books, to see if what you’re looking for is available: http://tinyurl.com/5enz46 #
- Whee! My Eee PC 901 20GB Linux version arrived! It’s a wee PC! Squee!
# - @jezlyn I agree. It was fan service - giving the people who love the characters what they want, rather than taking itself too seriously. #
- Hmm. The Eee PC 901 Linux version comes with Firefox 2 instead of 3. Strange. Will upgrade soon, but I want to run “stock” for a while. #
- @Yasumoto The Eee PC 901, with the 8.9″ screen and 1.6GHz Atom processor is $599. Windows version has 12GB, Linux version 20GB. #
- @Yasumoto There are other, less expensive netbooks, though. MSI Wind, Acer Aspire One, Dell, Lenovo. They shoot closer to $300. #
- So, a couple days later, what’s the verdict on iPhone OS 2.0.1 on a 3G? I’m hearing scary things from @xenijardin…
# - @gregr Thanks for the vote of confidence. To everyone - does it make the interminably long “Backing up your iPhone” go faster? #
- Because seriously, I haven’t synced my iPhone in a week or so, and it’s been “backing up” for almost an hour now…
# - Anyone know where the @gnomedex Friday night party is going to be? Trying to decide if a $50 party pass for @rachelbancroft is warranted. #
- @sondrasondra I think that’s the Thursday night welcome reception/party. At least, that’s where it’s been the past few years. #
- @verso The Twilight Saga, of which Breaking Dawn is the 4th and presumably last, is a teenage love story with humans, vampires, and more. #
- @verso It’s campy, emo, and the largest audience is probably Mormon housewives. But I loved the whole series.
# - Giving in, installing iPhone OS 2.0.1. Wish me luck. #
- @fiveforefun Yes, the Twilight movie should be… interesting. The trailer is boring. The series has a RABID fan base, though. #
- @chrisorourke I’ve heard that 2.0.1 does revert jailbroken phones, as most updates do (until the community catches up). #
- @sumwan I hadn’t heard of Dashwire, but it looks pretty cool. Let us know if you try it! #
- iPhone 2.0.1 update went without a hitch. Now to see if I notice any differences. A backup happened in less than an hour, so hey… #
»
- @jmoriarty For big laptops, I’ve used and loved a Kensington Saddlebag Pro for years. It’s great. For netbooks, the Timbuk2 Metro looks good #
- @jmoriarty @tersteeg I too am a big fan of Crumpler bags. When I replace my “main” bag, it’ll be Crumpler. They watch Twitter, too!
# - @bljarv Mother’s Bistro, Mama Mia, Jake’s Famous Crawfish are some of my favorites. La Terraza is OK - food’s not that great, though. #
- @bljarv Jake’s is kind of spendy, but it’s the best food I’ve had in Portland. #
- @bljarv Never been to Jakes Grill, but the food is probably the same. Now that you mention it, McCormick & Schmick’s (1st/Oak) is good, too. #
- For people who say they have no interest in Amazon’s Kindle, how many books do you buy in a year? Want to measure readers vs non-readers. #
- @smb Buy or read, I should have said. #
- Kindle followup: for you book lovers, why NOT a Kindle? Price? The “feel” of dead tree books? Wouldn’t you love to replace the bulk? #
- I’m not trying to be a Kindle salseman. Just trying to understand reasons. Need to own/hold physical book is high. But why? Hmm… #
- @robertbrook Good point about not being able to borrow/give away on Kindle. Amazon argues that lower book prices offset that. Do you agree? #
- @Jerry_Makare Wow. Powell’s must love people like you (and me - I still buy a lot there, even with my Kindle). #
- @chrisorourke Yeah, backlight would be nice. I’ve been pleasantly surprised at how well a book light (like the one Amazon recommends) works. #
- @tlockney See, I HATE the bulk of books. It’s uncomfortable. It limits how many I can carry on my person. I’m glad to be free of the bulk
# - @sarahgilbert re: each book a gift - a nice way to look at it. There are still books that, for me, are physical totems. More than the words. #
- @chrisorourke Yes, needing a book light is kind of silly. But I went for months without one, Now I don’t bug my wife with the light on.
# - @fiveforefun I decided on the Timbuk2 Metro bag, but haven’t ordered yet. #
- To sum up “anti-Kindle” reasons: DRM is evil, no lending, no bulk/smell, upfront price, gadget stigma, no backlight, not unique like a book. #
- I postulate that people who love the Kindle are those who are willing to sacrifice the tangible experience of books to absorb more content. #
- @jezlyn I bought Breaking Dawn on my Kindle at 9:02 PM PST Saturday night (2 minutes after launch). About 75% through it. No spoilers!
# - Thank you all for this awesome Kindle discussion. This is why I love my network of people on Twitter/FriendFeed!
You all rock! # - @bikehugger The eReader and Stanza book apps for iPhone are VERY good, with tons of pay and free books. Re-reading Snow Crash on my phone
# - @jezlyn Yeah, I’d have been done with it in a day if real life didn’t intrude so often. I’m loving it so far. Lots of surprises. #
- @unclenate @jstogdill Books/shelves as self-expression are important. I do a LOT of that. You should see my cube/house.
# - @blaircook You should totally do a tweetup at IDF. I won’t be there, but check with @annierodkins or @jmoriarty. I bet they’re game! #
- Let’s turn this around a little. If you have and love a Kindle, WHY do you love it? Carrying lots of books? Online store? Searching? Web? #
- Here are a few of my reasons for loving Kindle: carrying TONS of books in my pocket, searching them all, looking stuff up on Wikipedia, etc. #
- I love that I was able to get a new. popular book (Breaking Dawn) from my hotel room on the beach without going to a store at midnight. #
- @JoshProStar But you CAN do all those social media things on a Kindle: feeds, Twitter, etc. It’s not perfect, but it works in a pinch. #
- I love that there are TONS of free books out there (Creative Commons, Feedbooks, Manybooks, Gutenberg, etc.). I’ve got dozens on my Kindle. #
- @JoshProStar That’s what your iPhone is for (easier).
# - @unclenate re: dangers of digitizing everything - Have you read Vinge’s “Rainbow’s End”? It looks at that in detail. Bought on my Kindle
# - @JoshProStar AT&T store should let you order one, have it shipped to store, and give it to you when it arrives. I know several who did that. #
- Anybody going to SIGGRAPH next week? Want to come to an Intel lunch with some Larrabee big wigs? Drop me a line. Couple of spots left.
# - @annierodkins I’m thinking more external folks - bloggers, tech writers, etc. who want more info on Larrabee. #
- @chartier I thought the 802.11n Airport Extreme DID support Time Machine backups to attached disks, with the latest firmware update? Hmm. #
»
- Feel like I dropped the ball BIG TIME for missing iPhoneDevCamp 2. Stars were misaligned. My schedule only gets crazier in the next month. #
- @iSundevil I have a Kindle and love it to death. If you’re a reader, I think you will too. Lemme know if you have any questions!
# - Extremely irate at Windows/Outlook/Exchange right now. I need to get the bridge number to a meeting I’m late for, and NOTHING WORKS. *sigh* #
- Today’s going to be a big news day for Intel’s upcoming Larrabee many-core graphics platform. An architecture whitepaper has been published. #
- Intel press release about the Larrabee paper: http://tinyurl.com/5b4m5b and the paper itself at ACM: http://tinyurl.com/6do32a #
- Intel Software Network and I will be at SIGGRAPH next week in L.A. We’re having a blogger event - let me know if you want to come!
# - @TillamookCheese Yes, we had lots of fun. Always do! And wow, I’m impressed to see Tillamook Cheese on Twitter. Very cool!
# - @verso I picked up 2 Across over the weekend, and it’s pretty good. Reviews were better than Crosswords. Good variety of puzzles to d/l. #
- @verso Also, it’s only $5.99. I blow more than that on candy from time to time, so what did I have to lose?
# - Huh? A severe weather statement warns it’s going to be really hot today, but we set a record LOW yesterday? http://tinyurl.com/56vkbh #
- @kellyrfeller If you like Tumblr, check out soup.io. I use it for my lifestream and linkblog. I found Tumblr to have some annoying issues. #
- @bikehugger Hey, I never claimed I WASN’T one…
# - My experience with 3G data coverage (AT&T/iPhone and Sprint/Kindle) on the Oregon Coast this past weekend: http://tinyurl.com/576tya #
- @rachelbancroft Maybe we should have an “awards ceremony” for her Tantrum Oscar when I get home tonight…
# - Retweet @NickStarr: If you use GrandCentral and an iPhone, check out the new iPhone App, GrandDialer - http://ping.fm/Nypr4 #
- @iSundevil Actually, it’s more likely a proxy issue that’s preventing the iTunes store from working. At least, IME, that’s usually it. #
- @iSundevil I just shared some GrandDialer info/screenshots to my linkblog: http://linkblog.joshbancroft.com #
- Dear Twitter: Looking for a small messenger bag that will hold an Eee PC and a Kindle (small size). Timbuk2? Other recommendations? #
- @segphault Did you ever end up getting that Timbuk2 bag we talked about, for Eee PC/netbook use? Thoughts? #
- Thanks for the bag ideas. Does anyone have SPECIFIC recommendations for a netbook/Kindle sized small bag? Smaller is better. Thanks!
# - IOW, is the X-Small size Timbuk2 TOO small for a netbook+Kindle? Is “Small” too big? etc. #
- @hawkear Thanks. The Kindle in its case is almost exactly the same size as an Eee PC, so the bag would just have to be “thick” enough. #
- @chartier GBOD (Green Blocks of Death):iPhone::BSOD:Windows?
# - @verso Thanks. I have a Crumpler Brazillion Dollar Home for my “big boy” HD camera and gear. They make good stuff. #
- @blath Why don’t I order a custom tailored leather case? Because I’m cheap, that’s why.
# - @verso Thinking about the Timbuk2 Metro I saw at Powell’s is what started this bag line of thinking. Looking like that’ll be it. #
- @verso This will be a super-small bag for when I ONLY want to carry a netbook+Kindle, etc. I have many others for bigger. Me = a bag hound. #
- The quest for the perfect gear/gadget bag is something I’ve always been prone to. Can you tell?
# - @TiEsQue Commissioning a bag design sounds cool, but there’s the “I’m cheap” thing, plus the “I’m not that creative” thing, too.
# - @kegill Commission an open source bag design? That’s…. a cool idea. And it made me think of one place I haven’t looked: Etsy.com
# - iPhone software 2.0.1 update is out. Anyone try it out yet? I’ll probably take this one slow and cautious… #
- Emma just pead all over my leg. With real peas.

- Headed home today, driving up the Oregon Coast. Stopped now in Cannon Beach for lunch. #
- Home, vacation over. Boo. Back to work bright and early tomorrow. Too many meetings, I can feel it. #
»
- Big day planned: Pig n Pancacke, Oregon Coast Aquarium, play on the beach, and who knows what else. Yay for vacation!
# - The Oddworld exhibit at the Oregon Coast Aquarium is very cool. It’s like walking around in Finding Nemo. #
- Coolest thing at the aquarium so far: spider crabs the size of Golden Retrievers. Agressive, too. Come right up to the glass and attack. #
- @influxx It’s in Newport, OR. Big town, or stay anywhere near along the coast. It’s all amazing. All Oregon beaches are public, too. #
- @lightningdiva We hit Mo’s last night. There was a big sandcastle contest there in the Taft district today, though. Have fun!
#
»
- Off to the coast with @rachelbancroft and the kids for the weekend. Next stop: Tillamook for cheese curds and ice cream.
# - Hey, AT&T has 3G coverage in Tillamook. Nice. I just pulled 597Kbps. #
- And my Kindle has 4 bars of EVDO/Whispernet. Tillamook seems well covered by 3G, which was not the case last year. #
- Wait a minute. Now Nullriver NetShare is available again in the App Store? I’m so confused! #
- Almost no signal at our hotel on Lincoln City, and it’s EDGE only. I’ve got 3G in other parts of town, though. 600Kbps at Mo’s. #
»
- WHARRGARBL!!1! #
- Guess how many meetings I have today? 8! Going to be a long day… #
- @apolloni Heh. Yeah, I tend to tweet a lot during meetings. I’ll try to keep the snark level down.
# - @techcrunch sez the Apple iPhone Push Notification Services SDK is out. Been waiting to see whot his will work. http://tinyurl.com/64zkse #
- In my group’s quarterly BUM (Business Update Meeting). I love BUMs. BUM BUM BUM!
# - @lyzadanger @jmoriarty LOL @ “BUM virgin” and “BUM brownies”
# - The most energized, enthusiastic topic at the BUM, that garnered the most comments, participation, and applause? Garbage cans. #
- Whoa. Del.icio.us just launched a complete redesign, including a new URL (http://delicious.com). More on the blog: http://tinyurl.com/6p7v3z #
- @jerry_makare This is my grown up telephone voice. I use it when I’m trying to sound important and professional and stuff.
# - Looks like the wonderful folks down at Ignite Phoenix have announced their lineup: http://tinyurl.com/6492od Looks great - wish I could go! #
- Whoa. NetShare, and iPhone app to let you use your phone as a 3G/EDGE modem, just appeared in the App Store: http://tinyurl.com/58yxtf #
- Aaaaand I’m on vacation until Monday. Headed to the Oregon Coast with @rachelbancroft and the kids. Tillamook for curds, aquarium, etc. Yay! #
- @billpearson I would love to work for a business with social good as its goal, as long as I could still pay the bills.
# - @billpearson thanks for the book reco. I’ll check it out (wonder if it’s on Kindle?
# - New features in the beta Google Reader for iPhone (google.com/reader/i): settings, option to format viewed pages for mobile. Yay!
# - I like letting Google Reader run pages through Google’s reformatter. Makes them smaller, load faster, and easier to read. #
- I use Google’s Mobile Page Translator all the time, via the Mobilize This! bookmarklet. Now GReader can save me that step.

- @jmoriarty Wouldn’t it be great if we could just say “I don’t care about numbers, data, or information. I care about meaning.” #
- @kellyrfeller The cam I rave about is the Aiptek Go-HD (or Action HD). Records straight to H.264 MOV. I love it. http://tinyurl.com/34bxb9 #
- Whoa. The Aiptek Go-HD is down to $159 on Amazon. Lowest I’ve ever seen (usually around $200). That’s a GREAT deal. #
- You can see some videos I’ve done with the Aiptek camera at http://jabancroft.blip.tv (looks for the ones I shot in China). #
- @Britopian The whole company using Twitter? Wouldn’t that be something to behold. We’d overwhelm it with “in a boring meeting” tweets.
# - @SharonG I don’t see an internal Twitter-clone taking off. You could only use it when you were on the company net. No phone/mobile access. #
- (Playing Devil’s Advocate on the internal Twitter idea - should be spicy!
# - @Britopian I know you’re new. We’ll beat that pesky optimism out of you yet!
# - @gwynnebaer Not Twitter nonsense. Kicking around the feasibility/desireability of running an internal Twitter service. What do you think? #
- Totally stoked about Jive’s Clearstep Community. If you’re a community manager, or deal with social stuff in your company, you need to join. #
- Clearstep has two focus areas: online communities, and internal collaboration. I know lots of you do both. http://tinyurl.com/5qbcy3 #
- @jezlyn The Aiptek Action HD is the one that does 1080p. I have it. Honestly, I think 1080p is TOO big. I use it in 720p 60fps mode. #
- @jezlyn Most of the videos at http://jabancroft.blip.tv were shot with the Aiptek Go-HD (except my Kindle unboxing). Shrunk down to 640×360. #
- @jezlyn I’m in the process of uploading the HD 720p originals of my Shanghai videos, so you can check them out/compare. #
- @jschultz That’s what the RSS feed is for, duh.
# - @rachelbancroft Fizzy science experiments!? Fun! Can I play?
# - HD version of one of my videos shot on the Aiptek Go-HD in Shanghai is up. Go to “Files and Links”, get the .MOV: http://tinyurl.com/5hlvvh #
- Oh, man! The TSA destroyed the RepRap that was at OSCON on it’s trip home to Bath!
http://tinyurl.com/62txto # - @bfraedri You can’t do Twitter wrong - don’t worry! Go look at who @pulseofintel is following to find more people to follow, and have fun! #
- @KathySierra FriendFeed is great for that - you can post more than Twitter, but not as much as a full blog post. It’s easy and frictionless. #
»
- Clearing out old un-listened to GrandCentral voicemails from as far back as February. There’s a reason my greeting says “email me instead”. #
- @TiEsQue You need to start @crazyneighbor a Twitter account and start posting his antics vicariously. It’s thoroughly entertaining.
# - Looks like Hasbro finally got around to having Scrabulous shut down: http://tinyurl.com/6ksx4w #
- I took enough notes and got enough ideas at OSCON for a month’s worth of writing, but I can’t escape meetings long enough to start writing! #
- Dear L.A.: Go ahead and get all of your earthquakes out of your system now, before I come down in two weeks. Love, Josh. #
- @DivaDanese You are so right. I’ve been struggling to find time to get into the right frame of mind for writing. It’s hard around here!
# - Wondering if it’s worth wiring up TwitterFeed to pipe things I post directly to FriendFeed (like this) into Twitter. Wish I cou.. #
- @iSunDevil Thanks! Can you tell I love talking about this stuff?
# - @kathysierra Thanks for mentioning my OSCON/writing tweet. I took a different approach this time, from my usual breathless liveblogging.
# - @tomnovak Ha! It wasn’t Smee!
#
»
- Hey, happy birthday @oregoniansteve! Facebook told me so. Hope you had a good one!
# - Slogging through a week’s worth of email that accumulated while I was at OSCON last week. Ugh.
# - I wonder what would happen if I just deleted all of these emails? If it’s important, they’ll get in touch, right?
# - So, Google Calendar supports CalDav now. So it can 2way sync with iCal. And an iPhone. Aweseome. http://tinyurl.com/5cykpb #
- Email conquered, but the meetings are getting the best of me. This day is winning against me, so far… #
- @annierodkins So sorry to hear about your kitty.
# - Cuil violates Josh’s Rule of Naming: never pick a name you have to explain how to pronounce every time it’s written. #
- And Cuil also violates the corrolary to Josh’s Rule of Naming: never pick a name you have to spell every time you speak it. #
- @kenekaplan I actually think Profilactic’s name is pretty clever.
# - @grigs ask @ravenzachary to opine on the fact that iPhone App “FairPlay” DRM has been cracked. Would love to know what he thinks. #
- Finally upgrading @rachelbancroft’s iPhone to the 2.0 OS. Can’t wait to show her the cool apps!
# - @hangry @rachelbancroft does make a mean taco soup. We need to get together with you guys again! #
- @tiesque Yes, Flickr and Digg violate the “have to spell it when you say it” part of the rule. But I’ve never had to spell Google to anyone. #
- @scottjedwards Viiv has always been my poster child for how to violate BOTH parts of Josh’s Rule of Naming.
# - @TiEsQue yeah, but at least you can phonetically sound out Google, Flickr, and Digg. Good luck with Cuil.
# - Looking for beach lodgings this weekend, came across the most awesome website ever. Don’t forget to View Source. http://seahavenmotel.com/ #
- Nice to know they built that site using Netscape 4.7 on Windows 5.0 (aka Windows 2000). Not a link in sight. Someone paid money for that. #
- @jezlyn I’ll ask @rachelbancroft and get her to blog the recipe, and post a link. Good idea!
# - Running Firebug against http://seahavenmotel.com/ just for fun. As @donpdonp pointed out, there’s a lovely giant 1MB JPG crammed in there. #
- Prolly sent http://seahavenmotel.com more traffic tonight than they’ve had in a long time. If they ran any analytics, they might notice.
# - @jezlyn et al - here’s @rachelbancroft’s recipe for taco soup: http://tinyurl.com/6h2hks Enjoy - I know I do!
