Quick inventory of the gadgets I’m carrying right now (and pretty much every day), and what I use them for. This is what I call my “standard loadout”:
- Dell Axim X50V Pocket PC - eBooks, TV shows, Rocketboom, Channel 9 videos, WiFi browsing, Skype, blogging, etc.
- Audiovox SMT5600 Windows Mobile Smartphone - Communications. Voice, email, MSN IM, Bloglines Mobile, random Google searches, etc. I’m playing with the Smartphone version of WeatherBug, and the really live weather data is extremely cool.
- Jabra BT250 Bluetooth Headset - paired to my Smartphone.
Creative Zen Micro iPod Shuffle - Podcasts. I’m sporting the Shuffle until I can replace the Zen Micro and its defective headphone jack.
- Sony MDR-EX71 headphones. The insulation has almost completely fallen off, and people point that out to me all the time. Great opportunity to tell them that this is the third pair of these to do this to me, and warn them off of this model of Sony headphones.
- Nikon Coolpix 5600 - Photos. 5 MP, tiny, great features. Goes with me everywhere.
- SanDisk Cruzer Titanium 512 MB USB flash drive - got to put my keys on something. Random storage and utilities like Portable Firefox, etc. Feels pretty much indestructable.
- Fossil Abacus MSN Direct Smart Watch - News alerts, stocks, etc. If I’m going to wear a watch, it had better do more that just tell the time.
- Leatherman Wave multitool. Obstensably for working on computers, or whatever else comes up, but to be honest, I mostly use the knife on it to open UPS/FedEx/USPS packages.
Besides my wallet and a handkerchief, that’s pretty much what’s on me at any given time. Livin’ the mobile geek lifestyle - please, just don’t mug me!
What’s your “standard loadout”? Do you travel light, or armed to the teeth, ready for anything? Post a comment and let us know.
jkOnTheRun: How to convince your SO you need a Tablet PC
“Josh Bancroft of TinyScreenfuls mentioned on his latest TinyPodcast that he is trying to convince his wife they need a Tablet PC for her to use in an upcoming calligraphy class. Very clever. Let us know if it works, Josh. :)”
I’ll keep you all updated, but don’t hold your breath.
A coworker dropped by today to ask a question, and show off his (non)shiny new black Motorola RAZR V3. I like the black much better than the silver.
Now, if they’d only make one with the guts of a Windows Mobile Smartphone!
You can see a few more photos I snapped of it under my RAZR tag at Flickr.

Here’s this week’s show, a little shorter than usual. You can download the MP3 file directly (right-click, save as), or subscribe to the TinyPodcast RSS feed in your favorite podcast aggregator to get the show delivered automatically to your computer and MP3 player. This week’s show is about 13 MB, 29 minutes. Brian was at a different location today, so we did the old Skype thing. Worked out pretty well, but if Brian sounds any different than usual, that’s why.
This week we cover:
- A little bit about our new audio setup
- Brian’s problems with a Cingular Motorola V220 cell phone
- Josh’s desire for the Verizon Samsung i730 EVDO Pocket PC Phone
- Josh’s last minute guest appearance on Episode #16 of the TechAddiction Show podcast with James Kendrick and Kevin C. Tofel.
- Received some cases from Corey at Innopocket, makers of fine metal cases for mobile devices, as part of their burgeoning community engagement effort. The magensium case for the Dell Axim X50V is great, and I’ll try out some of the iPod cases at the next Portland Podcasting meetup. Expect lots of photos and experiences soon.
- Listener feedback: gadgets in the workplace. TSF fans in the UK and Finland. Gadgets on vacation: what do you take with you? Brian says I need the equivalent of a MedicAlert card to explain all my gadgets when going through airport security.
- I try to convince my wife that we need to get a Tablet PC for her upcoming calligraphy class.
- Gadget lust - wanting and anticipation is half of the fun!
We cut the show a little short due to room issues. As always, we love to get feedback! You can email us at tinyscreenfuls@gmail.com or call our voice feedback line and leave us a message - 206-339-TINY. Let us know how we’re doing - good or bad.
Sincere thanks to everyone who reads and listens - stay subscribed!
I paved my Dell Axim X50V yesterday, to install the latest ROM update from Dell.
I love the feeling of a fresh install! To celebrate, here’s a screenshot of my Today screen. Click on the image to view it at Flickr, and mouse over the Notes for details on what everything is. I’m using a new WisBar skin from Juni called GoldenCut. Love it so far. I was using Juni’s Organizer skin previously, and kept the Today theme from it, since the darker blue theme from GoldenCut made my text colors too hard to read. Juni makes some great Pocket PC app skins.
As a side note, Flickr Notes are a great way to annotate your photos or screenshots with descriptions or additional info. You can even add Notes to other people’s photos. Try it out if you haven’t already - post a link to your Today screen in the comments!
Google Moon - Lunar Landing Sites
In honor of the anniversary of the moon landings, Google has expanded coverage of Google Maps to cover (part of) the moon. Nice.
Zoom all the way in for a surprise…
To install the latest ROM update from Dell. Love that fresh install feeling.
Here is a celebratory post from PocketBlogger. I’m not blogging from an airplane, but I am in the bathroom giving my daughter a bath.
Robert Scoble - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Heh. I just made my first Wikipedia edit in the article about Robert Scoble - changed the # of feeds that he reads from 150,000 to 1,500. I was almost caught up with him at one point, with 1,400, but I have since pruned back to about 500.
Robert, if you’ve somehow become a human Technorati, and increased the number of feeds you’re subscribed to a thousand fold, let me know, and I’ll edit the number back.
kct’s digital world: techADDICTION #16: Josh Bancroft guest appearance
Kevin C. Tofel and James “jkontherun” Kendrick invited me to join them on the TechAddiction Show podcast last night. I was happy to accept, and we spent about 15 minutes talking about mobile gadgets and technology (including the X41 Tablet, Sony PSP, and the Samsung i730 Pocket PC Phone with EVDO). I had a great time geeking out with Kevin and James, and I’d do it again anytime, guys. Oh, and sorry for the Skype issues on my end - I had a laptop reboot right when you were going to call, and I was behind the company firewall. All things considered, I think Skype worked amazingly well.
Check out the TechAddiction Show podcast #16 for July 19, 2005 for the interview/geeking out, and subscribe if you like it.
Thanks for the kind words and chance to geek out, Kevin and James. I’ll have to have you on TinyPodcast some time!
