Already Seeing the Impact of iTunes 4.9

In the last two days, I’ve checked my Feedburner stats for TinyPodcast, out of curiosity to see what impact, if any, the release of iTunes 4.9 would have. The results have been surprising.

According to Feedburner, I have a “circulation” of about 300 (regular, subscribed listeners). Yesterday, that jumped to 500. According to their little pie graphs, about 30 percent of those subscribers are using iTunes 4.9 (17% on Windows and 13% on Mac). I’m also getting 5000-6000 “hits” (probably non-subscribers directly downloading shows) per day, which is a similar boost.

Hope everyone else is getting new results from all the new people out there that have a podcast aggregator. A rising tide lifts all boats…

TinyPodcast 2005-06-28

Here’s this week’s show. You can download the MP3 file directly (right-click, save as), or subscribe to the TinyPodcast RSS feed in your favorite podcast aggregator to get the show delivered automatically to your computer and MP3 player.

This week’s show is about 20 MB, 40 minutes, as usual. We do a brief look at Hot Shots Golf for the Sony PSP, and I spend the rest of the times telling Gnomedex 5.0 stories. Good times! Gnomedex was the most fun a geek could have without getting arrested. It was awesome to meet so many of the people I subscribe to. Can’t wait for next year!

As always, we love to get feedback! You can email us at tinyscreenfuls@gmail.com or call our voice feedback line and leave us a message - 206-339-TINY. Let us know how we’re doing - good or bad.

Thanks for listening!

Podcasts Are Everywhere!

When I got the train this morning, I was listening to today’s Daily Source Code on my Zen Micro. I sat down next to a guys listening to his iPod, and I noticed that he was also listening to the Daily Source Code - episode #200, from Gnomedex.

I showed him my Zen, and he smiled and nodded. I pulled out my camera to take this shot, and the guy across the aisle asked why I took the picture. I explained that were both listening to the same thing - Adam Curry’s podcast. Seemed to go right over his head. :-)

Anyway, I left a TinyScreenfuls.com card with the iPod listener, and told him I would post the photo there. If you’re him, post a comment or email me, and let me know what you think about podcasting! I was actually in the audience while Adam was recording DSC #200, the one you were listening to. Make sure to check out my podast - TinyPodcast. And the Portland Podcasting Meetup group at PortlandPodcasting.org.

Small geeky world, isn’t it? :-)

Hot Shots Golf on PSP

I picked this up when I was at Gnomedex in Seattle. Didn’t get a chance to play it until I got home, though. It’s a great game - Brian and I give it a quick review in the latest TinyPodcast (which I’ve uploaded, and a post is forthcoming - stay tuned!).

Google Releases “Google Earth” - 3D Earth Browser

Google Earth - Home

Remember Keyhole, the cool 3D app you could browse incredibly detailed aerial photos in, giving you a feeling of flight and quasi-omnipotence? Google bought them last year. And now you can get the Google Earth experience for free.

I’m downloading now, and I’ll post more thoughts once I’ve played with it for a bit. But if it’s anything like Keyhole, this is going to be the coolest “wow factor” application on your computer.

EDIT: Whoa. The animated Driving Directions just blew my mind. Choose Driving Directions, enter your origin and destination, get the route, then click on the “Play” button under the turn-by-turn directions, and watch as you’re flown along your route, in 3D, with the aerial photographs filling in as you go. Awesome!

iTunes 4.9 with Podcasting Support Now Available

Apple - iTunes - Podcasting

We knew it was coming one of these days, but iTunes 4.9 has officially flown the coop. I’m downloading now, and I’ll post my impressions as I play with it over the next couple of days.

You can find TinyPodcast in the directory under Technology, Smart Phones (I’d think we should be under the Gadgets category, or just under Technology - I’ll see what I can do to get it changed). So if you give iTunes 4.9 a spin, make sure to subscribe to TinyPodcast, and drop me a line to let me know how it works!

Chris and Scoble on The Red Couch

When Adam Curry started playing the mashup of Paradise City and Sgt. Pepper, he observed that no one was really getting up and dancing. Scoble fixed that, dancing down the aisle, and flopping down on The Red Couch. Chris joined him, and a few more people piled on afterwards. We were all having so much fun, we all would have piled on if we could have. Geek rock concert! :-)

Daily Source Code #200 on The Red Couch

The party during Adam Curry’s keynote and recording of Daily Source Code #200 felt like a rock concert for geeks. It was awesome!

And I was right there, on the front row!

A sad moment - the end of Gnomedex 5.0.

Robert invited everyone to a bar crawl that night, and breakfast at the first Starbucks the next morning. I had to head back home, but from the photos I’ve seen in Robert’s linkblog, it was a blast.

Can’t wait until next year! G5 was, without a doubt, the most fun I’ve had as a geek!

Homebrew Chess on the PSP

This was one of pt’s demos during Gnomedex - he showed off this homebrew chess game running on an unmodified U.S. firmware v1.5 PSP.

He also showed off some emulators with thousands of ROMs - you could literally load up your PSP with every Atari, NES, Super NES, or Gameboy game ever made, or use some of the great fan-created ROMs out there.
