Google Web Accellerator Continually Overwrites Auto Proxy Script Setting

I’ve been playing with the Google Web Accellerator since last night. Not sure how much it’s actually speeding things up yet (it has to work for a while to know what to cache), but I’ve run into one problem.

On my work system (Shh! Don’t tell IT! Oh, wait, I am IT…), it continually overwrites IE’s “use automatic proxy configuration script” setting to “http://localhost:9100/proxy.pac”, instead of the required setting I have to use to make IE work with the proxy at work. I changed it back several times, but it kept getting reset, and basically making IE unusable.

Firefox works OK, but I can’t find a way to just disable GWA for IE, so I might have to disable it altogether on this system.

Anyone know of a way to let it run for Firefox, but disable it for IE, or otherwise stop it from overwriting the auto proxy setting?

Posted up some photos from last week’s Portland Podcasting Meetup. Go check them out!

Google Launches Web Accellerator

New Google Software Attempts to Speed Up Your Web Browsing Experience

Interesting. Web accellerators have, in my experiences, often caused more problems than they were worth. And there’s the taint of spwyare/slimeware around them (how many flashing banner ads have you seen offering speedier web browsing?).

Can Google legitimize this category of application? I’ll download it, and give it a shot.

You’re Never Too Old

I had the chance to spend my weekend with my folks - which is a rare treat since they live 600 miles away. What made the time especially cool is that I rediscovered that my 70 year-old dad is still a geek! You should have seen his reaction to my Axim X50v! The thing that made him the most excited was the ability to read the Bible with hyperlinked footnotes, but video and wireless Internet were nearly as compelling. He says he’s going to pick one up and has been asking for suggestions.

So, if you ever think you’re getting too old for this stuff…think again. Here’s someone who’s discovering new technology as he begins his 7th decade!

Happy Birthday Mark VandeWettering!

brainwagon.org

Dave Winer asked people to link to him for his 50th birthday. Mark mentioned something similar in his latest podcast, without posting it to his blog, to see if anyone still listens.

I’m listening, Mark. That’s the great thing about RSS - once you’re subscribed, it doesn’t matter how long between posts, you’ll always get them.

Keep the podcasts coming! Your recent one on the topic of Adam Curry echoes a lot of the thoughts I’ve been having on the subject.

Adam Curry Forks Off of Podcasting

The Doc Searls Weblog : Tuesday, May 3, 2005

Doc Searls did a great job of summing up what I’ve been thinking about Adam Curry’s recent announcements about his business plans for Podshow.com and podcasting in general.

First, Adam is definitely a radio guy. You can’t listen to the Daily Source Code and not notice that. So taking his show to Sirius satellite radio is a natural step. But it’s not podcasting. It’s broadcasting. Sure, it’s taking new voice into the world of radio, like PW Fenton, Steve Gillmor, and I’m sure that Dawn and Drew will get in on it somewhere. I hope that they continue to make their stuff available via podcast, because I’m not about to pay for satellite radio, which is both less varied than podcasting, and doesn’t give me the ability to listen exactly when I want.

Podcasting is listening to what I want, when I want. On my terms. Radio, satellite or otherwise, doesn’t let me do that.

As a podcast creator, I’m fine with people going the radio route. If they want to turn their podcast into their job, good for them. For me, this blog, and my podcast (in both video and audio incarnations) have never been about gaining fame, recognition, or income. I do this because I really love it. I’m a geek at heart, and an evangelist. My payoff for blogging and podcasting? Showing something cool and useful to someone, and helping them have that “A-ha!” moment when the lightbulb comes on, and the “get” what I’m raving about, be it Cluetrain or the latest gadget.

So, it seems that Adam Curry has forked off from podcasting, and is blazing his own radio/podcasting hybrid trail. It will definitely be interesting to watch. But I think I’m on the other fork in the road - the one that see podcasting as yet another medium for the conversation. To me, it’s all about building relationships and listening to people’s voices.

NPR’s Science Friday available as a Podcast

Science Friday: Making Science Radioactive - Audio and Podcasting

I love to listen to Science Friday on NPR, but it’s on the middle of the day on OPB, which makes it hard to catch all the time, especially at work. Other NPR programs, like On The Media, and Future Tense, have been available as podcasts for a while.

Today, on a whim (actually, after I saw it in Audible’s RSS feed for free audio), I went to the Science Friday website, and lo and behold, there’s a sticky link at the top of the page that says “Try Our Podcast!”

Excellent. I’m subscribed!

TinyPodcast 2005-05-03

Here’s this week’s show. You can download the MP3 file directly (right-click, save as), or subscribe to the TinyPodcast RSS feed in your favorite podcast aggregator to get the show delivered automatically to your computer and MP3 player.

This week’s show is about 21 MB, 44 minutes. A little longer than usual, but we had lots of cool stuff to talk about!

I’ll put up some detailed show notes after I get a chance to listen through the show. This week, we talk about the big Adam Curry podcasting/broadcasting news, why we do TinyScreenfuls.com and TinyPodcast (hint: because we’re geeks, and we love it!), helping other people reach that “a-ha!” moment with blogs and podcasting, bandwidth and site statistics, Brian reviews his new Creative Zen Micro (verdict: sweet, unless you’re wedded to iTunes), and I review my new (work issue) T42p laptop (verdict: it’s a monster, in a good way!).

We did another Video Edition companion to this podcast, covering the Zen Micro and T42p reviews - look for it in the next couple of days. Better yet, subscribe to the TinyPodcast Video Edition RSS feed (seperate from the audio podcast feed) in your favorite enclosure-aware aggregator, and you’ll receive it automaticallly whenever it’s published.

As always, we love to get feedback! You can email us at tinyscreenfuls@gmail.com or call our voice feedback line and leave us a message - 206-339-TINY. Let us know how we’re doing - good or bad.

Thanks for listening!

Wonderful Geek Lifestyle Moment

I’m on the train right now, listening to podcasts on my Shuffle, and reading feeds via Bloglines Mobile on my BlackBerry. Mike Lehman’s Manic Minute was just on, wishing Dave Winer a happy birthday, and recommending Morning Coffee Notes as the podcast of the day. I was reading Dave’s Scripting News feed at the time - his account of his birthday party/geek dinner in NYC last night. And the next podcast queued up on the Shuffle? Dave’s recent Morning Coffee Notes thunderstorm podcast.

I love the mobile geek lifestyle! I feel so connected to all of the other geeks in the blogosphere!

EDIT: Added some links from my desktop once I got to work, but the rest of this post was done from my BlackBerry on the way in to work.

TinyPodcast Video Edition 2005-04-26

Sorry this week’s TinyPodcast Video Edition took so long to get up here. Blame a combination of a busy work week, waiting on Ourmedia.org, and phases of the moon.

At any rate, it’s here now, for your viewing pleasure. You can download the WMV file directly (10 minutes, about 37 MB), or you can subscribe to the all new TinyPodcast Video Edition RSS feed in your favorite media aggregator. Both Doppler and iPodder handle video quite well, so you should be able to get the video edition delivered automatically just like the audio podcast.

In this edition, we take a video look at Brian’s demo of some cool OneNote features, we take T-Mobile’s new street-level signal map, and the latest geek fashion accessory, an orange Lockergnome “RSS” pin on my iPod Shuffle. RSS + MP3 = podcasting. Great conversation starter!

Anyway, have a look, and as always, we love to get feedback. Let us know what you think!
