Blogger.com Now Autosaves As You Type - No More Lost Posts!

Blogger Buzz: No More Lost Posts!

Whee! Glad to see this feature added. I’ve been bitten by failed posts (not so many browser crashes) often enough that I’ve taken to writing posts in a text editor, then copying them into the Blogger post window right before publishing.

Also great to see the Blogger Buzz blog. I always thought it was strange that the Blogger folks didn’t have a blog…

TinyPodcast 2005-04-05

Here’s this week’s show. So much cool geeky stuff that we run out of time, and left lots of stuff out. Maybe we’ll have to do a supplemental show this week to catch up.

This week’s show is about 45 minutes, and weighs in at about 20 MB. As always, you can listen to the show by downloading the MP3 file directly, or subscribing to the TinyPodcast RSS feed in your favorite podcast aggregator to get the show delivered to you automatically.

Read on for this week’s show notes:

  • Google Maps adds aerial/satellite photos from the recently acquired Keyhole. Cool!
  • Google bumps Gmail storage capacity to “Infinity + 1″, and our speculation on how they do that. I’d love to tour the Google datacenter.
  • Google to launch video blog hosting, a la Ourmedia.org? If so, here’s to hoping they improve the experience.
  • Can Gmail + the rumored Google Calendar replace Outlook + Exchange for enterprises?
  • Still don’t have Gmail? Drop us a line. Want an invite to Yahoo! 360? Drop us a line.
  • Josh reviews his new Sony PSP, and the game Lumines (crack++), which is like a cross between Tetris and Bejeweled, with reactive music and sound. Hard to explain, but a very cool sensory experience. I try to explain, but it doesn’t quite capture the experience. Look for a video review soon, to get a better idea what I’m talking about.
  • Did you ever play a video game so much that you saw it in your sleep, or when you close your eyes, or hear the music constantly in your head? That’s how hooked I am on Lumines.
  • Discussion on video game music - I’m a big fan of music from Nobuo Uematsu and the Final Fantasy series.
  • I pre-ordered Mercury, a puzzle game for the PSP, where you guide liquid mercury through levels and puzzles by tilting the world. Can’t wait.
  • The PSP uses proprietary Sony media (UMD and Memory Stick Duo), but can play video in MPEG4 format (use PSPVideo9 or iPSP to transcode from other video formats, and copy the video to the PSP using the right folder and file name format), music (MP3 or ATRAC3), and JPG photos.
  • PSP has built-in WiFi for multiplayer games. Wipeout Pure game has a built in web browser that you can use with a tweaked DNS server (look here or here for portals, examples, and more details).
  • I’ll have to model the “I <3 Bloglines" t-shirt that I got, because I truly do heart Bloglines. :-)
  • Skype update for Pocket PC, still doesn’t work well in forced “true” VGA mode. Offers other fixes, though.
  • My wife Rachel, and almost-two-year-old daughter Emma call in and make a guest appearance on the show. Don’t miss Emma say “iPod!”. :-)
  • We do the show because we love it, and would continue to do it if we had 2 listeners or 2 million. We’re geeks all the way through, and we can’t help it.
  • HP iPAQ 6500 series “communicator” specs leak from the FCC. I feel like I should be more excited about this device, but for some reason, I’m not…
  • I want my next phone device to have EV-DO-like wireless data speeds - 500+ Kbps or bust!
  • Too bad we depend on phone companies to implement all of these next gen data services. We need a company like Skype or Google that can actually pull of cool stuff to take charge!

We love to get feedback. You can email us at tinyscreenfuls@gmail.com, or call and leave us voicemail at 206-339-TINY. We love our listeners, and hope you enjoy the show!

Google Maps + Keyhole Satellite Photos = WOW

Google Blog

I guessed this was coming, but Google has added the ability to view (and pan and scroll) incredibly detailed satellite and aerial photos from the recently acquired Keyhole to their fantastic Google Maps.

This rocks.

You can do everything you could do before with Google Maps, but now there’s a “Satellite” link up in the corner that switches you to the photo view. Awesome. You can still do searches for points of interest, get driving directions, etc. But you do it with a birds’ eye view. Especially nice if you live/search in an area covered by Keyhole’s hi res color photos.

It’s late, and I’m off to bed, but I had to post about this when I saw it. I’ve got a lot more stuff that I want to talk about, but I was offline most of the weekend (playing Lumiines on my PSP and visiting the in laws) and Monday (rebuilding my work laptop after a crash). Lots of cool stuff to come this week!

Portland Podcast Meetup Video Posted

Portland Podcast Meetup 3-24-2005 | Ourmedia

Here’s a link to the Ourmedia page for the video I took at the Portland Podcasting Meetup last week. You can stream it from that page, or click here to download the WMV file to your computer and watch it. The video is about an hour long, and weighs in at about 200 MB, so you might have a better experience downloading it first.

Let me know what you think of the video!

For reference, you can always see all of the media (audio and video) that I’ve posted to Ourmedia.org on my Ourmedia.org page. I’ve got a lot of stuff that I plan on putting up there in the future, so keep an eye out.

Sony PSP Opening Ceremony Video

Sony PSP Opening Ceremony | Ourmedia

I videoblogged the “opening ceremony” when I got my new PSP home the other night, and uploaded it to Ourmedia.org.

You can go to the page linked above to stream the video, or click here (right click, Save As) to save the video to your computer. It’s about 35 MB, and 10 minutes long.

Share the excitement and new gadget smell from opening a new toy with me! :-)

iPAQ AC Adapter Works with Sony PSP

With all of my gadgets, I have a proliferation of AC adapters and chargers. You should see the floor next to my nightstand - I need a power strip just to plug everything in. And whenever I travel, I have to take it with me.

So I was pleased to notice that the extra AC adapter I have for my old HP iPAQs is the same plug type and output rating (5V, 2000mA) as the AC adapter for my new Sony PSP. I just tried it, and sure enough, it fits perfectly, and charges the battery. One less adapter to carry when I travel, now.

Actually, that adapter will work with and power several of my gadgets, now. I use it to charge my Dell Axim x50v Pocket PC, too. The plug is compatible, and while the original Dell adapter has a little higher output (5.4V, 2400mA), the iPAQ adapter fits and charges my x50v just fine. I’m not going to try using the more powerful Dell adapter on the PSP yet, though. Too afraid to break my new toy.

So now, when we travel, I can take one adapter to power my x50v, my PSP, and my wife’s iPAQ 3650. Nice!

Disclaimer - you’re probably violating your warranty and taking your life in to your own hands or something if you use anything but the OEM adapter to charge any of your devices. I’m not responsible for any electrical fires, melted plastic, or fried gadgets that result from playing AC adapter mix and match. You’ve been warned.

Bloglines Adds Podcasting Support

Bloglines | Podcasting

Not sure if this is just explaining/clarifying the “enclosure” link that appears when a feed item has an RSS 2.0 enclosure (like a podcast MP3), but it’s two of my favorite things, podcasts and Bloglines, so here I am posting about it:

Once you subscribe to a podcast feed in Bloglines, it will be added to your personal My Feeds list. When a new podcast is available, you’ll see the alert next to that feed. Each podcast update has a text note accompanied by an “enclosure” icon that links to the audio podcast file. Simply click on that enclosure link to start the podcast. That will launch your desktop media player or specialized podcasting software like www.dopplerradio.net, and the podcast of your choice will play right from Bloglines.

Plus you can save podcasts to your Clippings folder, or post them to your Clip Blog to share with others.

Experienced podcast listeners like to use Bloglines to monitor for updates and get notification when new podcasts are available, so they never miss episodes of their favorites.

I’ll definitely have to play around with this some more. I’ll let you know what I find.

I already use Doppler’s “sync with Bloglines” feature to manage my subscribed podcasts - I can subscribe to a new podcast from anywhere (mobile, etc.) simply by subscribing in Bloglines, and adding it to the “My Podcasts” folder I created, which is configured to sync with Doppler on my computer at home. This new “My Feeds” functionality might be a better way to do that.
