I love gagdets. Pocket PCs and other handhelds, cell phones and wireless devices, GPS navigation, videogame consoles, PCs, ebooks, etc. You name it - if it’s gadgety in nature, I’m probably all over it.

- Running late. @rachelbancroft is at Cub Scout camp all day, so it fell to me to get the kids to the sitter, which can’t happen til 8:30. #
- Bummed that I’m going to miss the opening OSCON keynotes.
# - @billpearson didn’t know you were coming to OSCON. Sticking around for the whole time? I’m inbound on the train. #
- @billpearson cool - I’m sure I’ll run into you sooner or later. #
- @billpearson I’ll pay no more than $40.
# - Whoa. Local news channel 8 KGW just called me. They’re doing a story on the “iPhone craze”, meeting me at OSCON right now to film. Crazy! #
- Got a similar call yesterday from the Oregonian for an iPhone story that’s supposed to be in today’s paper. Yay for friends in local media! #
- @turoczy I’m meeting them outside the main entrance. Not sure where we’ll go film. Come on over!
# - I told them to look for the guy in orange shoes. I’m pretty easy to spot. #
- @turoczy pontificating about his old iPhone to KGW news (after I did the same): http://twitpic.com/54k2 #
- Any OSCON women with an iPhone want to be on TV? Come to D131 RIGHT NOW!
# - @bikehugger I know! TV news guy wanted a woman to film. I know many that are here, but all were busy, I guess.
# - The iPhone piece KGW just filmed will be on tonight at 5 and 6:30pm. Channel 8 local, will be on kgw.com, too. Don’t miss me and @turoczy! #
- In @markgross’s session on building a dev box for OSS development. Lots of arcane mail config voodoo - mutt, procmail, etc. #
- Is it really THIS complicated to set up email? Do we still have to worry about a mail server rejecting our mail because headers are wrong? #
- I haven’t seen anything described so far that GMail can’t do (sorting, etc.). In fact, he’s using Gmail via POP in his example. *boggle* #

- @conroyl Windows apps in a birtual machine on a Mac work perfectly (except high end games). Much better than the old days. #
- @dtwood I’ll definitely be sharing my presentation, once it’s refined a little more. #
- What’s the situation on the ground at OSCON today? What are the “can’t miss” goings on? #
- I’ll be in the “People for Geeks” session later. Sounds cool, plus @selenamarie is a rock star.
# - @funkatron um, wow. Sorry I missed that!
# - @jmoriarty arriving momentarily… #
- At OSCON, grabbed early lunch and requisite Mt Dew, de-crapified my bag, and now I’m ready to roll! Er, sit. Or whatever it is we do here. #
- @jmoriarty I avoided the lunch rush, grabbed a slice of pizza (I was starving). I’m loitering upstairs before the next session. #
- Really happy about the fake red moleskine notebook from Google in the OSCON schwag bag. I love those things. I’ll take yours if not wanted. #
- OSCON schwag bag highlights: http://twitpic.com/516d #
- Apparently there are multiple collectable colors of the Google notebooks. Gotta catch em all!
# - Headed over early with @jmoriarty to @selenamarie’s session “People for Geeks”. #
- @sourcecode Super Secret launch of the Google Notebook Dead Tree Edition at OSCON - in all the google colors!
http://tinyurl.com/5c5svp # - @rklau Amazon never said all books would be $9.99. They said bestsellers would be $9.99, and most would be $9.99, but lots are more $$. #
- @rklau There have been a lot of Kindle books I’ve not purchased because they were more than $9.99. Seems to be a mental inflection point. #
- Bunch of managers just “outed” themselves in the “People for Geeks” session (we’re talking about How to Speak Manager).
# - @schwern You did a great job. I shall do my best to apply it, and Not Be A Jackass.
# - OH: “If your boss is an idiot, and is still allowed to work for your company, then you need to find a job at a different company.” #
- Good thing my boss (@billpearson) is VERY not an an idiot. I need to work harder at making him look good, though. #
- OH: What ARE bosses for? Bosses clear away problems, and make it possible to do your job without interference, have what you need etc. Amen. #
- Mike Arrington wants Intel to help him build his web tablet: http://tinyurl.com/5gycsc That’s what we do, Mike. How can we help you? #
- @iSundevil @Britopian I’m not sucking up to @billpearson, just being honest. Unless it’s working, in which case, I’ll do it more.
# - After a much needed mint brownie and Mt Dew break, we’re back. @jmoriarty is becoming my Soda Butler - he hooks me up!
# - @selenamarie just took the stage in OSCON People for Geeks. Her preso is “Leading Without Being In Charge”. She’s a user group expert. #
- @selenamarie See? That pre-emptive “good job” I gave you was well deserved! And nice Legion of Tech plug in there.
# - OSCON (Google guys): “Sometimes people in a company like to ‘play company’, setting up processes for no reason.” Sad AND true. #
- @DivaDanese Which OH? Probably not. I’ve just been tweeting snippets from the People for Geeks tutorial.
# - @blogan OH = shorthand for “overheard”. I’ve been using it to indicate it’s something I heard, rather that something from my brain. #
- OSCON Day 1 (for me) in the bag. Skipping evening festivities to head home and spend time with @rachelbancroft and the kids. #

- In an all day ISN team face to face meeting at a coffee grinding company (Longbottom). Wifi is sluggish…
# - @amybarton Yay! I’m glad you got to film the CERN guy. I’m bummed that I’ll miss him. Can’t wait to see the video! #
- When someone tells me to close my laptop lid, because they want my full attention, they’d dang well better be interesting. #
- Interesting discussion on work life balance and separation. I’m secretly tweeting this, supposed to be “paying attention”.
# - @jmoriarty Yearning for coffee? Dude, we’re inside. A. Coffee. Factory.
# - Longbottom Coffee, where we’re having our all day face to face meeting: http://snipurl.com/32kem #
- @billpearson Yes, Twitter is a religion, and I am a convert. Can I come in to your house and tell you a little more about it?
# - At the Legion of Talk Mark Shuttleworth event at the Mission Theater. In line for food. Should be a great night!
# - Shuttleworth is awesome. I chose not to live tweet, but focus, relax, and listen. Video will be available if you missed him. #
- Woo hoo! My feeds say that the WordPress iPhone app is out! But I can’t see it in the store yet. The suspense is KILLING me!
# - @caseorganic You’re welcome! Glad to answer your Kindle questions. If you buy one, use the affiliate link on my blog!
# - @jmoriarty Yes. The iPhone app has been submitted, and it appeared in my “new apps” RSS feed, but it’s teasing. It’s not in the store yet. #
- A ha! I was poking around the App Store under Utilities (per @danielpunkass), and WordPress finally showed up! Now, to try it out. #
- WordPress for iPhone screenshot: http://snipurl.com/32vgk #
- As much as I like it in general, the iPhone keyboard is AWFUL for typing HTML. Angle brackets are buried so far away!
#

- @iSundevil You take a screenshot on iPhone 2.0 by hitting the Home and Sleep buttons at the same time. Image goes into your Camera Roll. #

- Lunch at new place, Tokyo Station. Cool model train going to the kitchen and back. Still waiting on my shrimp tempura udon. #
»
- Ugh. Not feeling well today. Started last night. Woozy. May not make it through the day…
# - @rachelbancroft I had a good breakfast. Well, a chicken biscuit from McDonalds.
But I can tell my body definitely needs real, good food. # - @hangry The phrase “for the love of toast” is a staple in our vocabulary. I don’t really know where it came from, but even Emma uses it.
# - @turoczy We tried to take care of the place while you and @kveton were gone. Some ruffians showed up for #isf yesterday, but are behaving OK #
- @JoshProStar You can use Twitter from the Kindle - just go to m.twitter.com in the browser. In practice, it’s kind of slow. Emergencies only #
- @macfixer I had a Twitter emergency when I bought my new iPhone, and it deactivated my old one. Had to use my Kindle to tweet/stay connected #
- @AaronTersteeg I still read your tweets 5 by 5, 10-4, good buddy, over and out.
# - Feeling somewhat better, but now I’m faced with finding something good for lunch, when I have no appetite. #
- In case you were wondering, the Amazon Kindle DOES charge over USB: http://tinyurl.com/6buvme #
- Here’s how Amazon can deal with the iPhone “threat” to the Kindle: make a Kindle app for the iPhone. You heard it here first.
# - @jschultz There are already two great ebook apps for the iPhone - eReader and Stanza. Stanza can read Mobi books, but not Kindle books… #
- What I’m thinking of is a Kindle iPhone app that’s tied to your Amazon account, can download and read the books you buy from Amazon, etc. #
- There’s absolutely no reason Amazon couldn’t do a Kindle iPhone app right now, if they wanted to. But only Amazon can do it, because of DRM. #
- @RichSPK You’re right, Kindle would have the advantage of the bigger, eInk screen, and battery life. Those can be reasons to upsell!
# - And why stop at the iPhone? Why not make a Kindle Reader app for Mac, Windows, Linux, etc. The .AZW format is just Mobi + DRM. This is easy. #
- @SarahCofer Interesting idea. Ping me after next week (after OSCON)? Would love to talk more about it. #
- @bobduffy There’s already a cloud site for people to buy, rate, and discuss Kindle books - http://amazon.com/kindle.
# - @bobduffy iPhone + eReader (which is also on every other platform) is great for books. I bought dozens of books from them before my iPhone. #
- @cvelis You know that you can hide individual items, or all items of a type in FriendFeed, right? Never see, say, Twitter posts if you want. #
- @segphault Shozu is a killer photo uploader app for Windows Mobile. I loved it. Or you could upload via email straight to Flickr. #
- @bobduffy Are you talking about “Friend of a Friend” stuff? You can hide all of that. #
- @bobduffy @cvelis You do have FriendFeed to send comments (optionally) to Twitter also, right? #
- @cvelis I’m still working on my Grand Unified Tubes Theory of the Internet. It keeps getting bigger. Which makes it harder to write.
# - @bobduffy Um, unsubscribe from those people? Choose to hide everything from them? Or are you talking about comments? That’s what you WANT
# - Just added my FriendFeed “Likes” and “Comments” to my linkblog: http://linkblog.joshbancroft.com. Check it out for my commentary on the news #
- @lauriegbuczek The CIO scheduled a 5PM meeting on a Friday? That should be an offense punishable by… Something equally horrible.
# - @jmoriarty They don’t need sleep. I heard they’re cyborgs. They keep managing. And they’ll NEVER STOP! Not until we’re all 100% on our MBOs! #
- @segphault Yes, I’ll be at OSCON all week (except Monday). We should definitely meet up! #
- Want to see Dark Knight tonight, but I hate crowded, noisy theaters. Maybe I’ll see Hancock instead, catch Dark Knight another time. #
- Ended up seeing Dark Knight. It was SUPERB. Dark, twisty, unpredictable, and long (in a good way - I didn’t want it to end). Go see it.
# - I’d never seen any of Heath Ledger’s other movies, and I kind of figured the posthumous Oscar talk was just hype, but he deserves it 4 Joker #
»
- Giving a training on “Social Tools for Engineers” to my boss’s boss’s staff in about an hour. Nervous. #
- This “Social Tools for Engineers” training will evolve and be given many more times, but this is the first. Hope I don’t suck!
# - @Alsymer Thanks. It’ll eventually be public (I’ll share the URL when it’s ready). Maybe it will be helpful!
# - Training in boss’s boss’s staff meeting over. Only got through 25% of my stuff.
Lots of discussion, though, which was good. Will go back # - Did you know that IE6 can’t view a Google Docs presentation? At all? And did you know that IE6 is the only browser Intel supports?
# - @billpearson @mediumtall Wow, sounds like ISF is a snoozer. #
- @billpearson You going to see @charleneli later? Tell her I said “hi!”
# - @kellyrfeller @billpearson Go to http://hashtags.org/tag/isf/ to see the #isf hashtags. Or do a search.twitter.com (which works better, IMO) #
- @amybarton Thank you. I didn’t even get to the good stuff! (Search feeds, Twitter, FriendFeed, etc.) #
- @amybarton I’m sure you’ll get the “honor” of seeing the rest of it before SES.
# - @kellyrfeller They’re not “normal” in the sense that they’re not “mass market”. They’re otaku geeks out on the edge of the influence curve. #
- @trhuseby Didn’t record this session, as it’s not baked yet. But I’ll make a recorded version available at some point. Thanks!
# - @bobduffy No way to create a group on Twitter without serious hacks. I used to use “with_friends” (as did tweetpeek.com). It got disabled. #
- @bobduffy FriendFeed room + imaginary friends works for groups. So does search.twitter if you don’t have too many people. #
- @billpearson I don’t know what you’re talking about. I’m a rock star. Also, I Am Iron Man.
# - Picked up a Mighty Bright XtraFlex2 book light for my Kindle last night at Powells. Works great, but 3xAAA batteries = heavy. Good for bed. #
- Great. Just when Twitter was running fast and smooth, they have to go rearrange all the furniture and screw things up again.
# - Whoa - Hector Ruiz stepped down as CEO of AMD: http://tinyurl.com/5jke4k #
- And now Twitter is back to the old look. I don’t know what they’re playing at, but Twitterrific stopped working. Is the API down again?
# - Sometimes I wish I could live in @wilshipley’s world: http://tinyurl.com/6qstcd
# - Favorite quote this week: “Passion is a great way to lubricate the machine of serendipity.” (Jon Udell). Applies all over the place!
# - Oops. That should have been “Passion is a good way to lubricate the engine of serendipity.” Not machine. #
- FriendFeed seems really quite lately. Is it because Twitter became usable again? #
- @blogan What’s the state of K2’s compatibility with WP 2.6? Is it safe yet? #
- Twinkle for the iPhone (Twitter geo client thingy) is out. Playing with it now. #
- No option to turn the sounds off in Twinkle = lame, but the fact that it shows all updates near me is awesome. #
- @ejacqui oh. Duh. I was stuck in the Identity subscreen, and didn’t see it. Luckily, Twinkle crashed, and I found it after.
# - Testing the photo button in Twinkle. Does this go to Twitpic? http://snipurl.com/30h89 #
- Ooh, I like how Twinkle shows that picture (and this one) as an attachment, rather than just a twitpic URL. Nice. http://snipurl.com/30h9x #
- (Checking from Twitterrific) ah, the pictures go to twinkle.tapulous.com, shortened as a snurl. #
- @julieteaston yes, just touch the little switch. Don’t try to slide it. #
- Wish I could tell Twinkle to use my Twitter avatar photo. I don’t have it on my iPhone, so I can’t add it in Twinkle. #
- Sad: muxtape.com no longer works on the iPhone. Happy: apparently, there’s a native app coming. #
»
- Whoa! I just discovered that emailing a photo from iPhone no longer resizes it to 640×480 (now it’s 800×600 - better, but not original). #
- See here for a photo on Flickr that was emailed from my iPhone, but is 800×600 (instead of 640×480): http://tinyurl.com/6dzb9p #
- @lunarobverse Emailing a photo strips EXIF data, including location. Only way I know to preserve is to sync to a PC, then upload from there. #
- @lunarobverse I’ve tried all the photo uploading apps, none preserve the location info. I have high hopes for @frasierspiers’ Flickr Export. #
- @jkendrick That Acer link is a dead end, and I can’t find anything about it on jkontherun.com. Embargo? Post get unpublished? Aliens?
# - The O’Reilly Kindle books are now available! http://tinyurl.com/5tyuqn Just sent samples of all the ones I haven’t read to my Kindle. Yay! #
- The Intel Software Network web devs cornered me in a room and grilled me about the future of ISN’s blog platform. Good times.
# - I’m a bachelor this week (@rachelbancroft’s at her mom’s), and I’m not taking very good care of myself. Still at work. Didn’t eat lunch.
# - For the record, I’m trying to find someone internal to address the whole “Intel stole EcoGeek.com’s Logo” issue. Got info? Let me know. #
- At Powell’s Beaverton. Long day. I don’t know how, but my phone has full blue dot GPS lock in this large building. Very cool.
# - @kellyrfeller Glad it’s fixed. I should have given it benefit of the doubt, but stuff like that has been done intentionally before. Sorry. #
- @geekygirldawn I’m not going to say anything either way, but I’m eager to see where Intel’s various communities fall in that list.
# - I love that so many Intel Software Network meetings end up using Twitter as a backchannel. Meetings are so much more fun with a backchannel! #
- @billpearson Have you ever heard me sing? Singing to Midomi on my iPhone doesn’t count.
# - @robteix And yet, our meetings are among the most effective I’ve ever participated in.
# - Does anyone know if the new Hillsboro Library (on Brookwood) has wifi? #
- Ah, the Hillsboro Library DOES have wifi. Should have Googled first: http://tinyurl.com/5776eb #
- @adamd made an AWESOME iPhone Inventory tracker. Check it out if you’re still looking for one (or just to admire): http://tinyurl.com/6e842g #
- @Britopian LOL are you going to preface all of your marketing tweets with that warning? Maybe I should try that.
# - I still have one really irritating problem with my iPhone 3G. Occasionally, Safari will roll over on its side, no matter how I hold it. #
- It’s like Safari wants its belly scratched, so it’s rolling over. It doesn’t care if it irritates me. Reboot fixes it. Bad accelerometer? #
- Going to work from the library this afternoon. I have some stuff I need to concentrate on, uninterrupted, and that just can’t happen in JF1. #
- Plus, I love the idea of being surrounded by books, words, ideas, and knowledge. Even though I’m anti-dead tree, I still love libraries.
# - @StevenWalling Yeah, but these are the ONLY problems I’m having with it. It’s otherwise perfect, much better than ANY other phone I’ve used. #
- Man, the new Hillsboro Library is great. Very geek friendly. I’ll be coming here more often. http://tinyurl.com/5nwxe8 #
- Don’t forget the tweetup tonight with @charleneli, at the Governor Hotel (where Internet Strat. Forum is). 8:30pm http://tinyurl.com/56dfte #
- I’ve spent the last 6 hours creating a Presentation in Google Docs. That is one impressive web app. I’ll never use PowerPoint again.
# - It’s looking like I won’t make tonight’s tweetup with @charleneli. Too much work to do, and I’m not feeling great. Have fun without me! #
- @charleneli Aw, man! Cancelled flights suck. But at least you’re still going to make it to PDX. Everyone, the tweetup is cancelled. Sorry! #
- Haircut done, getting food at Daphne’s, then over to Powell’s to get more work done. #
- I am STUNNED at how good Shazam is. It not only nailed the Kelly Clarkson song at the hair place, but it got the Greek pop song at Daphne’s. #

- @jmoriarty I dumped Loopt because 1) It doesn’t DO anything, and 2) they’re acting kind of scummy with SMS spam: http://tinyurl.com/5fkdwt #

- Restoring my iPhone 3G. Hold me, I’m scared! #
- @ravenzachary Yeah, I expect it to take about the same amount of time as my 1.0 -> 2.0 upgrade. Still a scary time, though!
# - @jmoriarty Hey, how come I can’t comment on your Open Port post? Are you trying to stifle conversation? Don’t make me karate chop you!
# - @queenmarypat I LOVE my iPhone 3G, almost as if it were a tiny, glass-and-plastic member of my family.
# - @ejacqui I was getting MASSIVE delays in most apps when the keyboard comes up. 30 seconds or more. Doing a restore to see if it helps. #
- And my iPhone is back from Restore Land. Had a scary couple of minutes where it couldn’t pick up a cell signal, though the radio was nuked. #
- Wait. Why does iTunes want to restore my phone from backup AGAIN, when I try to sync now? #
- @kellyrfeller Why do I have to register just to post a comment? And why is there nothing on the page that tells me so? Kinda user-hostile… #
- @greghughes I want it to restore from a backup, but it JUST did that, like 5 minutes prior. I’ll let this one run its course. #
- @eriksr I’ve brought all of my iPhone troubles upon myself - messing around, restoring, etc. Majority of people never deal with any of this. #
- @bschlenker Looking for an iPhone game? Get Tap Tap Revenge. It’s free, and awesome! Think Guitar Hero/DDR on iPhone.
# - @eriksr iPhone is light years beyond Windows Mobile in terms of stability (I used WM for years). My probs are because I’m on bleeding edge. #
- Hmm. This second, unnecessary iPhone backup restore seems to be stalled around 50%. Should I intervene, or leave it? #
- As in, the “Restoring iPhone from backup” progress bar hasn’t moved in 20 minutes. How bad is it if I interrupt? #
- I unplugged it. Phone was completely wedged. I forced it into recovery mode, going to try another restore. *sigh* #
- After this restore, I’m NOT going to restore from a backup. Start clean, then sync stuff over. What I should have done in the first place. #
- Plan Restore-but-don’t-load backup was successful. Data synced back over, syncing media now. None of the hiccups I was hoping to squash yet. #

http://tinyurl.com/59re5m # - @bobduffy But when I go to Jeff’s post, not logged in, I don’t see ANYTHING that tells me I can post a comment. It just says “No comments.” #

# - @justinkistner That’s because @turoczy is going to be out of town tomorrow night. He gets a pass this time.
# - My iPhone 3G has been behaving MUCH better after restoring to 5A347 and not restoring a backup. No freezes/reboots, location working great. #
- @kodachrome22 Haven’t tested reception yet, but I don’t expect it to change. The update didn’t touch the radio firmware. I’ll report, though #
- @bschlenker These are basically the steps I followed: http://tinyurl.com/6onk9x Find where iTunes keeps backups and move em to avoid restore #
